Threshing machine drive belt

I've noticed that a lot of drive belts for threshing machines are run so very loose. Some say it is better for pulling the thresher.

I don't believe that. It just seems to make for poor safety anywhere near that belt. Your thoughts?

I don't care to be near a working belt anyway, tight or loose. Also need to remember those long belts are HEAVY, they don't need to be pulled back really tight and straight to pull most heavy loads.

As Leroy says the wt of the belt keeps the grip. You arent supposed to be near the belt and thats the way it has been since the beginning of belt power. You also stake the machine fast so it doesent move.

As has been said, the length and weight of the belt provides tension for grip to drive the belt. However it also allows for easy alignment. If you try to tighten a short belt you'll find you can't keep it tight or aligned. You only need to get a long belt close for it to run and a little movement by the tractor or implement does not throw the belt off.

that is perfectly normal. you will never pull a 100 ft. belt tight. they run with a twist and dont drag on the ground either. nothing dangerous about a belt. the pulleys are designed when lined up properly that the belt will not fly off. i will stand by a belt any day before standing behind a combine chopper.
