H not charging...

6 V system; 6.5v on battery run or not running; On regulator there is juice on "L" post and "batt" post. Nothing on Field post. I don't seem to have any juice on "Arm post" on Genny. Ideas?

First, polarize the generator, engine stopped... momentarily jumper "BATT" terminal on reg to "ARM" terminal, thwn start andcheck again. If sill no charge "full-field" the generator by grounding the "F" terminal. If that doesn't make it charge there's an internal generator problem, cold be as simple as worn or stuck brushes.

I did! Mr Jim gave it to me last night; I think it all checks but not charging; so it must not? Thank you...I will keep checking!

Okay - this is hard to believe but - I have always been decent at 12v and 24v systems; 6v gennys give me trouble- makes no sense. I will try this.....thanks !

I polarized the arm post- it did spark- started tractor - nothing. Then I grounded "field" while running- shows about 5 amps charge on gauge. So??? Also- when running the "Arm" post is not hot....

If it passes BOTH motor tests it should charge, if not take two aspirins and call me at the office.......If the field is dead grounded and all grounds are good yet still no charge its usually the genny is bad

Mr John T ; passes BOTH motor tests; I went thru Genny - brushes are new......WHile running - I grounded the Field and amp gauge moves to the right 3-5 amps...... but I still have no juice coming from Arm post on Genny while running.

I don't have your number! LOL...but passes both tests - it shows small charge to right when Field is grounded. No juice on ARM post on Genny.

If the generator works when the field is grounded engine running (you said it did) the issue is the regulator. The regulator voltage control grounds the field to make it charge. If the F terminal on the regulator shows zero ohms to ground (shut off) maybe the wire from the F on the gen to the F on the regulator is bad. If it does not show ground (zero ohms to ground) at the F terminal shut off, the regulator may be ungrounded (the regulator must have its structure grounded to the tractor). Make sure of this. If still no ground at the F terminal of the regulator (not running) the regulator is bad. Jim

You said it passed the motor tests. You said it charges when the field terminal is grounded. That means the gen is working and the regulator is not. There are two parts inside the regulator one is a cutout relay that prevents back flow from the battery to the gen when the engine is stopped. The other is entirely separate and is a Ground for the field. this ground conducts electricity to the body of the VR and from there to the VR mount and to the tractor where the VR is mounted, completing the path for the field. The field gets its voltage from the third brush, through the field windings, to the F terminal, from that through the wire to the F terminal on the VR, from there through a set of points and resistors to ground as the previous sentence.
