Hydraulic Cylinder Compression

I know this is not a tractor per say question but i have a hydraulic dump bed and the hydraulics have ripped off the bed, im trying to rebuild it and am wondering how I could compress these cylinders, they are compressed by the weight of the bed as in they only move out and the weight moves them back in. Should I remove any hydraulic pipes and would this help or any other ideas. And of course if this is not allowed please delete. Thanks for your time and have a nice day.

Very few hydraulic cylinders have built in spring or gas pressure. To push them back in will require putting the controls in the "lower the load" position. If electrical, the control will need voltage to work. (be careful to use ACC position or limit the "on" time to avoid heating ignition components if it is not started) compressing both at the same time could be done with a high lift jack turned around so it compresses, then anchoring the base to the cylinder base, and the moving part to the ram crossmember. Can't you use air pressure with a rubber tip blow gun to retract it by blowing in thru the vent? Be careful-it moves suddenly and forcefully.Mark

I thought of that as well, but decided that if it had gotten stuck in the extended position, the air pressure might be built up enough to cause that uncontrolled action. It would work if the oil in the extend side was dampening the travel. Jim

Lot's of single acting cylinders have no vent, the rod is the diameter of the piston. Such as in multi stage dump cylinders.

A come-a-long may be the best.

Thanks everyone, yes a come along was able to get it in enough so that I could get everything welded back together. The old dump truck can dump again...
