I bought a tractor part on ebay.
It was in Kentucky, I am in Alabama.
I was charged sales tax after I bought and there was no mention in description.
I know when you buy in your state, you pay sales tax.
Is this now customary?

(quoted from post at 18:50:04 08/18/17) you can sign a ky farm exempt paper and not pay tax

So--if you buy anything located in Kentucky, you pay sales tax even though it is shipped out of state ?

(quoted from post at 18:54:01 08/18/17) Report to ebay and give him bad feedback,
That's what I plan to do if it is illegal.
I might add, that seller ignored my email with concern over this added charge!

Depends on if the seller was a private seller, or was a company with a branch in YOUR state. Amazon now collects sales tax in Iowa, even though Amazon (to my knowledge) does not have a warehouse in Iowa. Collecting sales tax on ALL internet sales is the coming thing. Like it or not.

Amazon has warehouses in so many states now that the gov't, in its infinite wisdom, forced Amazon to start adding sales tax to all sales regardless of whether that state has a warehouse, or plans for one. I can sort of understand their reasoning though, as a LOT of revenue had been lost due to out-of-state sales, and Amazon is very nearly as big as Walmart. So this is their way to keep the coffers filled.

Many states think they are losing big $$ from out-of-state internet sales .
Some states are requiring sales tax be collected and then forwarded to the state
you live in. Not all companies are on board with that, yet.
the tax% they charge should be your home state charges.

All the stats are loosing potential income from no sales taxes being collected on out of state purchase. Sooner than later we will be paying sales taxes on all out of state purchases...

If they don't start colleting sales taxes from out of state purchases they will eventually increase your income / property taxes to level out the balances or increase your local sales taxes to compensate for the lost revenue.

We will pay it one way or the other, whether we pay it in sales taxes, income taxes, or property taxes.

I would rather pay it in sales taxes as I feel the rich person is and will buy more things as well as more expensive things.

I now watch it before i check out. some places charge and some don't. a farm sales tax examption works or a sales tax number.

Some sellers also sell through Amazon and
Yes sales tax in my state on ALL Amazon
purchases. I think ebay may require tax
collection if seller has large enough
sales.

If he's doing what he's supposed to be doing he will remit the sales tax to Alabama - where you took possession of the goods.

A lot of online companies start charging sales taxes after they have been hit with a sales tax audit. Those make an IRS audit look like child's play.

If the vender also has an outlet in Kentucky too then they would have to charge tax. I don't know how you could find out if they have an outlet or not. They might just be collecting the tax and pocketing the money.

You can go on the internet and ask about the sales tax as I did. If you own a business such as internet sales, then you must charge sales tax in Kentucky. So if he is in the business of selling parts and you do not have a farm tax exempt paper filed with him he must charge you the tax. It would appear to me that he was legit but he should have stated it in the add. That is what the leave feed back is for.

In Texas Amazon has a sales distribution warehouse in Ft. Worth. That makes them a Texas seller and anybody living in Tx. gets to pay the tax unless they can get Amazon to honor their Tax Exemption and the purchase is blessed by the Texas Comptroller as a legitimate farm purchase aka item is on the approved list.
