So with the help of you guys on here i got my tractor running again. It seems to be running a little rough when i get it going and has a hard time starting sometimes. It seems to flood out easily because the plugs get soaked and gas spews out of the carb when i take the intake hose off. Itl start and run if i turn it over right away when i turn the gas on but not if i wait too long It just seems to flood out. I am wondering if i messed the adjustments on the carburetor up when i had it apart to clean. How do i readjust it?. Also i am wondering if the new plug wires should be copper like the old ones i took off. Would i not be getting good enough spark to burn the fuel? Any more help would be great. I am a beginner so this stuff is new to me but i catch on quick and enjoy doing it. Thanks

You have a carb float problem and the float is not making the float needle seat in the seat to shut off the gas

How would a guy fix that.. is it as easy as taki g the carb off and apart then making sure everything seats right when i put it back together?

Ruggeddd.........ya gotta computer on yer tractor? Thats WHY yer BelchFire-V8 has string sparkie wires 'cuz computers donna like electrical noise that sparks make. Use COPPER CORE on yer tractor and yer sparkies will sparkle. Ennytime ya haff startin' issues, change yer sparkies AGAIN!!! Recommend AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025. Don't throw yer old FLOODED sparkies away, just clean'n'dry 'em, one-atta-time in HOT running engine and save'um fer the next time (and there will be a NEXT time) Since ya confessed to muckin' with yer carbie, here's how to adjust it rite. Set yer down-pointing mainjet to 2-turns and LEAVITT!!! Adjust yer side-pointing idlejet for FASTEST idle, NOT SMOOTHEST idle. Understand the difference??? Usually about 1/8-1/4 turn. Adjust the behind the carbie idlespeed fer ennythang under 500-rpms. I know yer Massy don't gotta tach, but guess ennyways. I rebuild the carbie on my eazy starting 52-8N and gotter to idle at 375-rpms with an transistorized tachometer. 2nd advice, gitt some gun-smithing screwdrivers, they're HOLLOW GROUND and don't waller out yer soft brass jets like standard "V" shaped blades. TIP: ya kenn make yer own hollow ground drivers by holding 'em against the side of yer electric grinder wheel. Simple, eh? .......HTH, the amazing Dell

Not a simple answer to that one. Could be as simple as putting a kit in it since you stand a very good chance to messing up the gasket when you open it up. Or or could be as simple as pulling the carb drain plug out and let gas flow for a few minutes to wash out rust and dirt in the needle seat or you may need a new float

Rugged when it runs rough or cuts out IS THERE A LOT OF BLACK SMOKE COMING OUT THE EXHAUST??

If so that will gas foul the plugs and they may get that flat black sooty look indicative of excess fuel.

The carbs bowl had a float that at the correct level it rises (unless it has a leak) and shuts off the needle valve so gas stops entering the bowl at the correct level. Often the needle valve and seat may get corroded or trap a small speck of dirt or crud or rust etc etc so it cant shut the gas off AND SHE FLOODS OUT runs over rich and can foul the plugs.

Checking the needle valve n seat and float and float level isn't too hard or rocket science but I'm not gonna try and explain it over the net. If you remove any air inlet pipe or tube and turn the gas on YOU SHOULD NOT GET GAS OVERFILLING THE BOWL AND RUNNING OUT THE CARB. If so again I suspect a leaky float or the float level is too high or the needle valve isn't working correct. I usually drop the float and check all that but you gotta know what to do and be careful

If its NOT flooding the bowl maybe the carb is adjusted too rich which would yield black smoke and foul the plugs

As in so many situations, from differential equations in calculus to pruning a fruit tree, the answer and technique might be on the internet.

Google the exact question you have "How to rebuild a Massey carb" or "setting the float on a ???? carburetor" and see what is out there.

You can even go to Youtube and search there.

Wire versus carbon wires will not make enough difference to notice during normal operation, you have another problem.

That is not 100% true. If the carbon wires are old they can cause major odd problems but if one checks the spark like I say to do that will show where a wire is bad

By the way I buy Walker Brand carb kits from O'Reilly's auto parts stores. That kit has a very good set of instruction in it so even a 10 year old if they can read can do a carb rebuild. Cost is around $20-25

True but again it goes back to the simple test of making sure the spark at each plug wire is a nice Blue/white and will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more simple trouble shooting few follow but can save a guy a lot of trouble and $$$

Yep I bet I have posted the simple spark/carb/air cleaner trouble shooting on Y-T over 100 times and I have to re-post it all the time since I guess few ever learn or they have not read what I post. LOL Plus my way takes not special tools to do the test
