The diesel tractor has sat in a barn for 12 years and was never started. What is the best practice before getting it going? Change oil and transmission-hydraulic fluid or drin out any water, start and run for awhile to remix the settled particles in the oil and then drain.

Depending on what it is if you can in some way get ATf in the cylinders by way of pulling the injector it would be best to do that so as to free up any sticking rings and valves

I like the second choice. Crack every plug loose, drain any settled water first, then get it running before changing. That will get all the oil circulating that has been sitting in the gallies and plumbing.

And, if there are any unseen problems, there won't be new oil wasted because it gets contaminated or has to be drained again.

Depending on the injection pump it might not start at all. I am not a pump fellow so I might be describing it wrong but there are plungers in the rosa master pumps that get stuck when setting for long periods of time. I have bought two combine engines that needed pump work after setting. The pumps turn over but will not pump fuel.I am going to look at a Deere 276 engine this week that is the same thing. Tom
