fuel in oil

How can you tell if diesel fuel is getting into the crankcase other than by the oil appearing to be to thin?

I was told to put a drop of the oil on a piece of white paper and that the oil will stay in one place and the fuel will soak into the paper and spread on out if fuel is in the crankcase.

Anyone hear of this?

Smell and level on the dip stick. If pump is putting fuel in oil, level will go up. Oil will be thinner because the fuel will mix with it. Never heard of the paper trick. Doubt it would work because of the mix.

When oil starts coming out the front main seal, you know you have fuel in it.

If you're getting enough fuel in the oil to cause a problem, you'll see the oil level rise on the dipstick.

Well if the oil level goes up or you can light the oil on the dip stick with ease then good chance you have a problem with fuel in the oil

I had a tractor that had the oil increasing in Volume, A friend showed me of the paper trick. It turned out the hydraulic pump was leaking a little into the crankcase as it is gear driven and the leaky seal let oil leak into the crankcase.

The man who told me about white paper has his obituary in tonight's paper,at 85 he knew a lot about diesels.

So... are you saying the oil, diluted with hydraulic fluid, did or did not soak into the paper?

If the oil level goes up on its own, it is a good sign of leakage. If not, why worry about it? Diesel fuel is just thin oil and a little in the crankcase will not hurt a thing.
