tractor insurance

Bought a new tractor and got insurance on it with State Farm who I have for cars and homeowners. I have 2 other pieces of property about 50 miles away that I bushhog 2-3 a year. They said homeowners wouldn't cover it at the other locations. This is for personal use not a business. They quoted me $281 a year. Does that sound reasonable.

What are they quoting you for insurance. I use to insure all 7 of my tractors for liability, taking them to shows and parades and I paid no where near as much as your quote.

We insure our 16 tractors and equipment with Texas Farm Bureau for approximately $300-$350 per year.

For tractors seems like you will do best with a farm insurance company Farm Bureau, Countryway and a few others. The insurance is on the tractor and covers it where it goes Except maybe roadside mowing. Implements and such are insured at so many dollars per thousand valuation. Far as land, guess that depends on your company generally farm insurance covers it (you could own hundreds of acres in 3 counties)!!! That prices sounds a little high to me. Also some companies have "country estate" which is for say 10 acres and a few sheep etc. So you should do some looking AND FIND AN AGENT THAT HANDLES FARMS RURAL PROPERTY AND HAS SOME KNWLEDGE OF SUCH!!!

My agent tells me that the insurance that I have on my Grasshopper mower only covers it if the mower wheels are on the ground, in other words, no insurance if it's being hauled. I have no need to haul it, but it's something that I wouldn't want to learn the hard way.

What is the value of the new tractor? Is it $75,000 or $2,500? Where are you located?

Some people like Farm Bureau but my experience with them has been they are great until you have a claim then you are a thief trying to steal their money by filing a claim. My BIL was a huge fan of Farm Bureau and he was Farm Bureau Family of the Year and didn't want to hear me say anything about them. Then he had a fire that burned down his 80 year old barn and killed his kids show pigs in the process. The barn was essentially worthless when "depreciated" even though it was weather tight and provided over 4000 square feet of storage. The pigs where worth market rate per pound, what they actually cost and were worth didn't matter even with documented proof. His tools and equipment were subject to their own deductible and nearly fully depreciated so they collected next to nothing on that. All in all he figured he lost over $40,000 and they paid around $3000.

30 years ago every person in my immediate family (13 people) had Farm Bureau, today not one does.

The trouble is farm use, personal use, so medial use, transportation...... Thrn liability and insurance coving the machine itself for each different possible use age.....

Such a machine can easily get co mingled into all the different categories,

They will be happy to collect your check, but if something goes wrong they will say well you were using it other than what the coverage is, so sorry.....

Very hard to cover all the bases.

Are you trying to get liability coverage, or replacement coverage if the machine is stolen or wrecked?

Paul

I just have blanket coverage for farm stuff. Doesn't matter how many tractors I have.My antique tractors are insured through hagerty. They have an agreed price they pay if stolen, fire damage, or wrecked.A regular insurance company will take your premium check and when something happens will only offer you junk price.I don't insure lawn mowers and small stuff, your not out much if you loose one.

I have separate coverage for the tractors I parade or show. My farm policy covers them here at home, not at a show. Truck insurance will usually cover your trailer, but not anything on it. A separate policy for tractors you show is necessary and very inexpensive.
