Wisconsin VH4D starter bracket

Got an old Gehl 4400 skid loader with a Wisconsin engine.
Prestolite starter was in need of rebuild so sent it out and reinstalled it. Starter grinds and doesn't engage ring gear sometimes and seems to be flexing where it mounts to the shroud.

Is there supposed to be some kind of rear bracket to support the back end of the starter? Don't have one, but there is a pair of tapped holes on a boss cast in side of block, so I'm thinking there should be one.

If I remember correctly there is a bracket that bolts to those two holes, and has a hole in it that catches the bearing housing that protrudes from the rear of the starter.

I agree with NCWayne. I'm surprised you don't have oil running out, as some of those holes go right through into the crankcase. They used copper washers on those capscrews too.

I have that same engine in a boom lift at home. I will take a look tonight, if I can see it I will take a picture and post it.

NCWayne is correct, also inspect that shroud thoroughly . I had a stump grinder came into
my shop and the shroud was cracked where the starter mounted along with the rear bracket
being missing.

Just so happen to have a wisconsin in the shop right now. There should be
a couple studs on the side of the block for it to attach to.

Thanks guys!
Now I know what is missing. Think this had the style that goes over the bearing on the end, as my starter has screws, no studs on the end.
Now to find one.

Got it installed today.
Managed to get it in without pulling the engine, but probably would have been faster to do so.
Can't believe how much better it starts now.
