John Deere Clutch Question

I've got a 1976 John deere 2440. Getting to the point I think I need a clutch repair.

My symptoms are clashing of the gears that are worse after the tractor warms up and if I'm baling or other significant work.

It's not slipping or moving after I put in the clutch. Just a lot of grinding when I try to shift. Periodically, I can get it to shift nice and smooth but it's getting more uncommon.

I've adjusted the external clutch pedal and I've greased the throw out bearing. Looks like the clutch pedal yoke was already tightened to nearly the end of the available adjustment.

The tractor does have a high low transmission.
How bad of a job is this to do? I called JD dealer and I'm waiting on a cost estimate from them but I'm thinking about doing it myself.

Thanks,

Chris

Not sure if this applicable to your machine or not.
On the pressure plates that have 3 adjustable arms I have come across one being out of adjustment this caused symptoms like what you are describing.

I agree with wore out clutch when you say it gets worse when tractor is warm. The heat causes the clutch disc to stick (vacuum) to the flywheel. A new clutch has grooves to help prevent this but when wore down it becomes more of am issue. I would go to Ebay and buy a John Deere service manual and with that you more than likely can do the clutch yourself. You could split it and take clutch and flywheel to dealer and then reinstall and put the tractor back together yourself. That would save you a good bit of money. Clutch time is also a good time to check the rear engine seal as well. Tom

I've bought some time on those ( especially if low houred tractor and clashing gears )by putting them in high gear wide open throttle hold brakes and let the clutch out and burn off some of the gunk on them. Do not go real long or you will fry it. I quit before you can really smell them.

don't know on JD, but we had a 530 case one time that did that, turned out to be the pilot bearing, it would let the input shaft wiggle enough to keep the gears moving
