U302 MINN. MOLINE GOVENOR

my u302 governor is completely unresponsive, tractor starts excellent, idles and speeds up but when going up a hill the governor wont open up, and going down a hill it races, are there any parts available and do I have to split the front end off to get at it? any help would be much appreciated

The first thing to do is make sure the linkage between the governor and the carb is not binding at all. With the tractor off & the throttle mostly open, the linkage should move freely back and forth.
It sounds as if the governor just needs the linkage adjusted. If you follow the adjustment procedure in the I&T manual it should work correctly. You might have to make a minor adjustment from the initial adjustment made following the book.

Jocco, a very good question. There is too little info by Dave to give a reasonable answer, such as which version U302 is it, there are quite few scenarios to analyse before splitting( condition of fork, condition of the crankshaft, has the shaft ever been broken and rewelded, condition of control spring, general adjustments as were pointed out by another responder), and, no we don't have to sell him parts, but he did ask. We generally encourage to buy parts locally if possible, we all need as many sources as possible for any color tractor, and once we lose a local vendor, it is a loss to a lot of good people. We feel a need to share some of our experience with people asking for help. Thanks, Jocco, you have a very valid question. Dale

I HAVE SOME ISSUES WITH YOU FROM THE PAST. Every time some one comes on here with MM stuff (jet star 302 etc) stuff you chime in to "call us we have parts and can help." BUT OFFER NO REAL HELP!!

I had the same problem with the same
tractor. Bought it sight unseen knowing
about a governor problem. It ran like you
describe. Would go wide open to an rpm that
would make you cringe. Noticed an unusual
bend in the rod from the governor to the
carb. Took it off and replaced it with one
from another tractor I have that I know is
OK and it ran like it should. I modified
the faulty one to match the other and I'm
still using it today. Runs great!!
