Bush hog stump jumper wear?

I have Bush hog 2615L (15' batwing, bought used) mower.
The center stump jumper got a little loose so I went to
tighten up the castellated nut. The nut went another turn
or two, not sure how many, but then I noticed that the nut
had gone beyond where the castellations would be held by
the cotter pin. So I found a big washer and put it under
the nut. That took care of that problem, but when I
tightened up the nut the stumpjumper pushed against
something and seized. I backed the nut off a little bit
and now all is well.
Question, what wears, the inside of the stumpjumper, or
the shaft? Do I need a new stumpjumper, or just find what
is binding and grind it off?
 
Only thing I can tell you is that castle nuts are not usually "tightened" to the point where they create tension on the bolt. Depending on the design elsewhere in your system, applying that tension might be what is causing your problem. Try removing the washer and have the nut snug to ever-so-slightly loose, then put the keeper pin in it and try it out. I'd definitely try this before choosing to tear into anything more!
 
Does it seem to fit properly with the nut loose? If it wobbles at all then you have a serious problem, the hub and or the shaft are worn. I see I'm not the only one with frustrations with Bush Hog's quality. My pan keeps bending up anytime I hit anything and then sometimes hits the bottom of the frame, very poor design.
 
Fortunately I've never had that problem. Unfortunately, that means I have no idea what happens in those instances.

My former brush cutter was a Howse, and not bat-wing. Ain't never had a tractor that big.
 
I'm nearly positive that the output shaft and the stumpjumper are tapered. That has been my experience with other cutters. I've never had the stump jumper off this one.
 
Likely, the hub and shaft are either splined together with tapered splines or tapered and keyed together.

They have worn and when you took up the slack the hub probably jammed against the bearing cover at the end of the gearbox that holds the oil/grease seal.

NOT good.

You need to take it apart and determine if that's what's happening and replace parts as needed to tightened up the mechanical joint and keep the hub of the "jumper" away from the bearing cover/seal holder.
 
I would drop the stump jumper off and check it's bore.Most likely it is worn and needs replaced.And check the shaft-if the shaft is worn(which I doubt),it would have noticeable wear.Since you tightened it down against the bottom seal,I would look at it and probably replace the seal,too.Use a floor jack,and maybe a helper,to lower,and raise,that stump jumper.Be careful under there!Mark.
 



Most stump jumpers are tappered... and you can continue to tighten them up to take up wear.... untill you force it against the top and it binds... as it sounds like in your case. running it loose will accelerate the wear. And hopefully a new hub or stump jumper will tighten up as it runs on a harden shaft.. You can purchase the shaft also if needed...
 
Like others have said the stump jumper hub and/or the gearbox shaft are worn out, the only proper repair is to replace both. However I have managed to "get by" by putting a washer on the shaft before the stump jumper, you should be able to tighten the castle nut. To take up the wear in the splines I used an aluminum can wrapped around the shaft an pressed into the splines.
That's NOT a permanent fix but it works for a while.
