Still having troubles. grrrrrrr SLLOOOWW,wont load up,wont connect,drops the internet.....I hate computers,electronics..................

Too many variables. First of all, WHAT is it that's slow? Just YT? Or everything? I come in sometimes and sit here for a minute or more before a page loads, yet all other websites seem to work great. ...Is the computer slow while offline, or only while online?

What kind of internet do you have? Today was a weekend, which usually means high internet traffic. Everything from dial-up and DSL to satellite and cellular gets bogged down if there isn't enough available bandwidth for the number of people surfing the web.

What kind of 'puter? Speed? Do you run Scandisk or defragment your drive? Have any security software running? Do you know what other programs are running in the background? Do you keep images enabled? Do you see all of the advertisements on every page? What about Malware? Auto updates? Is your hard drive getting full?

Also, if your PC is older, there's a good chance you have loaded up and later deleted many files and programs. There may still be traces of these files/programs that work to slow your system down.

But wait, there's more! ...However, best to start with the basics. Do a web search on "[i:845623c5e6]how to speed up a slow computer[/i:845623c5e6]" or "[i:845623c5e6]why is my computer slow[/i:845623c5e6]" and you'll find lots of helpful sites. But beware, not every site is an honest one. Only go with websites that you have heard about for a long time, as they will be most likely to provide the help you need.

I have Norton Security on my PC, but also downloaded the free version of Avast. It was an experiment, and one I will soon correct! Avast has slowed my system down considerably. Keep in mind that having too much security doing too many things in real time will also slow down your system and eat up your resources. One thing I like about Norton is, it optimizes my PC while it's sitting idle. I also have ALL updates to notify me, but allow me to say when I want to download updates. Sometimes I have time for updates and sometimes I don't (or don't feel up to it). Likewise, sometimes my connection is slow, while other times there is plenty of bandwidth and everything is cruising along nicely.

Lastly, BACK UP EVERYTHING before you begin!! Cannot stress that enough! Go to Walmart or Amazon and buy a USB hard drive and back up everything on your PC before doing anything else. One tiny mistake, whether on your part of due to mis-information or misunderstanding can create problems. Save your photos specifically. Any personal videos? Save them specifically. Personal files? Save them specifically.

...One more thing - and I should have mentioned this much earlier on, but clear out the cache on your browser. If you're not sure how, do a web search for instructions, "[i:845623c5e6]how to clear my browser cache[/i:845623c5e6]". ...And also, check to see if your computer is full of dust. It may be running hot due to poor circulation, like having a clogged radiator on a tractor.

more information is needed....OS, the exact problem...etc.

Wow. I'm at 0.64Mbps download and 0.61Mbps upload right now. ...Then again, I'm also past my 4G allotment for the month and am on 3G unlimited now.

...Well THAT'S certainly interesting! I switched over from the phone box to the wife's cell phone and tried again. For some reason, her phone isn't limiting the signal like the phone box does. This time got 11.55Mbps download and 2.23Mbps upload. Quite the difference!!

Thanks for the link Tom!

This way off-the-wall... but our computer was loading internet slow AND it would drop the connection too. I figured it was our old modem needing replacement.

It turned out to be a corroded wire in the connection box outside our house - the phone company tech said there was only about 1-2 strands of wire still making connection.

Also as others have said, google and youtube often have written instructions/videos that are very helpful. (I just recommend NOT clicking on any links within any written instructions on the net.)

Knowing the brand of computer, the type of operating system, etc. would help folks know how to help you.

Seems computers are set to automatically Defragment these days - but it might be worth checking the settings and/or manually doing a Defragment.

After Defragmenting... I also occasionally do a Disk-Cleanup.

Also Clearing Internet History gets rid of some clutter too.

I have been having a problem where it will not even let me turn the computer off. It will not load anything. I then call my son out of his room and let him work out the problem. He does not like that either. So it might be time for him to spread his wings, and fly away. Then I think most of my problems will go away also. He uses the internet to play games and His will work when mine will not.

We had a connection problem the other day too. We lost internet and it ended up being a plugin in the back of the computer. This is a new computer put together by a local computer store. We are finding out they used cheap components where we plug the cables in.

For most people these days I recommend switching to Chromebooks. Big Windows desktop units are way more computer than most people need and require lots of petting, the Chromebook is trimmed down and nearly maintenance-free. Like taking the little car instead of the 1-ton truck to the grocery. But if you don't have good internet, or you object to keeping your data in the "cloud", forget it. Personally, I use Linux for almost everything, or Android. I still need Windows to download Kindle books in a format that I can change to standard e-book type.

Ok, new PC means Windows 10, which I have absolutely ZERO interest or knowledge in! Did you have any files transferred from your old PC to the new one? It's possible you could have given yourself a bad file already. However, I'd more readily think that your PC is backing up everything in real time to some cloud storage service. I won't use cloud! And one shouldn't, if they don't have a fast connection.

Do you have a security program? McAfee? Norton? Avast? Other? Norton doesn't slow my system down, but if I change the settings, it definitely would. This new Avast software....I don't like it! It has been slowing the PC down since I installed it, and they've tried to make it idiot-proof, which means I can't tweak it for best performance.

New modem? Are you going through a firewall? It's possible that your settings are not where they should be. Also, how do you connect to the modem - via cable or wi-fi? If using wi'fi, there are several factors that could be slowing down your connection. I know your literature may state that if you're within so-and-so feet of the modem that it'll work, but that's not worded well. The farther from the modem you are, the weaker your signal - hence, the slower your connection could be. Key word is "could".

Another question is, what speed was your old computer compared to the new one? What about RAM (memory)? The more RAM, the faster your PC can work. I would guess that this would be offset by the newer operating system, which should work much faster with the modern internet than your older system - but who knows!

As this is a "new" computer, I would hazard to guess that you have far too many programs running on there at any given time. Just like with smart phones, there are programs that you will likely never use that are booting up and running whether you use them or not. There are ways to go about thinning the list and culling out the needless software, but I'm not even gonna touch that one! If you're not 100% certain what a particular file or program is, leave it alone. It might just be essential!! Also, if you have security software that checks every single thing you do, then that could be causing a bottleneck.

Does the PC seem slow when offline? If not, then it's an online thing. Also, just for example, I don't use Flash on my PC. I removed it completely! I also have it so I can turn images off when my connection is really slow, plus having an ad blocker. So many sites now have these little videos that load automatically, and unless you have a high speed connection, you could sit there for hours waiting for all the stupid videos to load up! This is especially bad on many news sites.

...If you're connecting to your modem through wi-fi, you might want to consider getting a USB antennae to plug into the back of your PC. This PC isn't set up for wi-fi, but my antenna makes wi-fi possible. Also, not all antenna's are created equal!! I've bought/used three or four different ones, from tiny USB thumbnail-sized things to the one I'm using, here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BDE4IUK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This thing is AWESOME!! I have a laptop that has wi-fi and bluetooth, but the built-in wi-fi is nothing compared to what this antenna can do! I also have another smaller antenna in another room that I definitely swear at more than swear by:

Hopefully some of these ideas will help.

ok, i tried the app, i have .69 mbps download and .21 mbps up load. is that good or bad? i have no idea how many jiggle boogies my ipad has.

That's fairly slow Glenn. What kind of service do you have?

Being so remote, our 4G speeds are way slower than if we're in town. But when we have 4G at the beginning of the cycle, it's pretty fast - I think the wife's smart phone isn't getting throttled back though, as it's often running really fast. ...But lots of glitches out here. We'll often have a second of fast internet followed by 30 seconds or more of nothing. It's pretty crazy, but not as crazy as us being able to get cellular internet when the nearest Verizon tower is 30 miles away!!
