LX172 won't move

Belts are good. Transmission goes through all the gears including reverse
because when I look under it I can see the end of the shaft that sticks out
spins at different speeds and goes in reverse. So it seems that the
transmission has lost contact with the drive shaft.Any help would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hate to say it but did you break the key inside the transmission? Sounds about what you are describing.

I am not sure. I'm looking at a diagram. Would you happen to know what part number it is? Also, is this a fairly easy fix?

Taking apart is probably the only solution. It could be a keywas (as noted) or a broken gear. Parts might mean a new transaxle. Jim

How about a sheared axle key. My wife's sisters mower did that. I think it is an LX-something. The key between wheel and axle is the one I am talking about.

I will second that the axle drive key has came out. If someone takes the tire off and does not put the washer on and just uses the snap ring the key will work it way out past the snap ring. I have bought two different mowers advertised with bad transmissions that just had the key come out.

NOT sure what diagram you are looking at, but you can look at the official parts catalog complete with parts drawings and part numbers by going to www.jdparts.com and making a couple of clicks, I find it easier to click on "previous parts catalog", then enter the model number.

BEFORE tearing anything apart, take a close look at the axle shaft in the center of the wheel at both sides with it running in gear to be sure it isn't turning free of the wheel hub. (Obviously, have someone on the seat in control, in case it would take off for some reason.) There's a key in there that sometimes shears.

That being said, if the input shaft is in fact turning, I believe the shaft and the bevel gear at the input of the transmission are splined together, with no key to shear there. (Not to say the splines couldn't have stripped.)

Thanks to everyone for the input. I'll get back to work on it tomorrow keeping in mind everyone's suggestions.
