Fox news has a special on the commissioning of the USS Gerald Ford as I type this.1000 ft. long-100,000 ton, 13 billion dollars is the price. The catapults use magnetism instead of steam or hydraulic to launch planes. It showed them shooting dead weight into the bay. No more "cold cats" GO NAVY---Tee

One awesome vessel. Local TV stations (Grand Rapids,MI) have been having a field day, even sending reporter to the dedication. But then, Mr. Ford was a "native son" from GR. A well deserved honor.

It's CVN-78, not CVA! N for nuclear. A is assault or attack; little baby carriers!

When he was Veep, spoke at my commencement at the Big House in '74. Didn't go, was at an amateur motocross race in the thumb...

Yes but. During the initial design and construction of the Nimitz, it was known as CVAN-68. The Navy dropped the A as Vietnam came to an end.

They will still be CVA's to me. Our squadron was on the Yorktown CVS-10-anti-submarine, then it was decommissioned and we went to the Intrepid CVS-11. We were the ugly step-child of the carriers. Oldest carriers in the Navy were the CVS's.---Tee

big tee,

I've heard rumor that the Navy may revert back to steam catapults. Unsure of that rumor's source, but saw many shots from the Enterprise. CVAN 65. Later CVN 65.

D.

CVA's to me, too. Didn't the "A" stand for "Attack"? The two I spent the most time on were Lake Champlain, CVA-39 and Saratoga, CVA-60. I was on the FDR briefly for carrier quals, but I can't recall her number.

As a Marine, I think I had more sea duty than a lot of sailors.

BTW, the "Champ" no longer exists, it's been recycled, and the "Sara" is going the same route.
