Detroit Diesel 2-71 Farmall M

This has been my project tractor, 2-71 Farmall M, I have a question about the Detroit, is vibration normal with a 2-71? it has N series liners and pistons and HVN75 injectors, I"m using the Farmall M flywheel.

I'm not sure about either the 2-71 or the original Farmall engine but if either is externally balanced (likely) using the wrong flywheel will cause torsional vibration which will cause the crankshaft to break.

It's your flywheel as it was somewhat balanced for the 4 cylinder and it was not balanced to much over 1550 RPM . And trust me on this one you do not want that breaking off and coming thru the bell housing at 2450 RPM . For best results here have a flywheel made out of 4340 and spun balanced , also change the vibration damper on the engine .

As previously stated the problem is the M flywheel and clutch. Requires a high rpm aftermarket M clutch that is balanced for the 2-71.
Could be pushing 95 flywheel HP at 2400rpm.

How did you adapt the M flywheel to the Detroit crank? How are you centering the flywheel? That could be your issue right there.

But is all seriousness, don't use that old M flywheel, get a steel one made and it be right for the job and you won't have to worry about it failing.

The M flywheel (actually a 400 flywheel) was redrilled on a CNC mill to the 2-71 bolt pattern and a spacer was made from the center of the 2-71 flywheel and machined to fit into the M
flywheel, I checked the runout and it was .006 but I bolted it to the old M engine and runout was .006, I"m thinking about taking the flywheel to a shop and have them balance it

I"m going to take the flywheel in to the high performance shop and have them balance it, ill take the pressure plate in too, I have a dyno, I hope to see that much HP! I was guessing 65hp

What part of "no don't do it" do you not understand ? M flywheels and pressure plates are noted for failing with extra rpm and HP.
Yes we know you spent a lot of bucks on the old piece of crap flywheel, a new steel flywheel costs $$$ and it is a lot of work to pull the engine gain.
It is also a lot of expense and work after that stock flywheel fails and it will fail.

No I didn"t spend big bucks on the old flywheel, I haven"t seen or heard of a Farmall M flywheel or pressure plate fail, its not a lot of work to pull the engine i"m going to to paint it
anyways, I have dynoed two Farmall M"s over 100hp with stock flywheels & pressure plates and they have been pulling them for years, if this was a 350 chevy in it there would be a problem
and I have heard of people using the M flywheels behind a 350 and a 454
