Tractor fish.

I lied about the tractor. We got a lot of rain here in N.E. Iowa today and I took the Gator out to the pond to see how things were doing. I saw that it had run over and when it does that it goes around the end of the dam and the water runs on the lawn before it runs to the creek. There were a couple of dozen of fish laying in the grass and most of them were dead. They didn't look like any I stocked two years ago-they were all about the same size 5-8 inches long. We did put some fat head minnows in for food but are these just chubs? Someone told me not to bother to stock it because in a few years it we be just bullheads, carp and chubs anyway. They told me that the geese and ducks carry fish eggs in when they visit you. Here is a picture of the fish. Any fish people out there?---Tee

Darn-two yrs. ago we stocked the bluegills and cats-last year in April we stocked 100 bigmouth bass at 85 cents apiece. They were about 4 ins. long. I suppose these are the ones. Why are they trying to escape? They were the only kind laying on the grass. SUICIDE???? Thanks---Tee

Shallow-water fish will often follow the flow of floodwater. The floodwater is covering up newer, fresher ground and will be full of goodies for them to eat. So it's not them trying to escape, but trying to get fatter.

....and a Florida strain at that. They are longer and grow faster than the American chub version. Fish hatchery where I got my start only sold FS for that reason.

One of the problems with them and perch is how they feed. On occasion I have gone out at night with a flashlight and caught them right on the spillway, where the water was only a couple of inches deep, lined up, heads toward the incoming water feeding. Thus the vulnerability.

Numerous times after a big rain I'd go out in the pasture, pick up the fry and put them back in. If you do it while the water is still running after a heavy rain, you can save most that you can find and catch....they do a good job of hiding so you have to move your scoop around to coax them out of hiding.

I will be over in a few years and help thin the herd. If you want to make em fat get some fish food and throw out every night. Dad feeds his every night and soon as the fish hear him come the water starts boiling.
