I run a 2010 medium duty freightliner.it has a regen system but doesn't use diesel exhaust fluid.its in the shop right now with a clogged exhaust system.is there something I can do to prevent a reoccurrence?it has 163000 miles on it

depends on engine, but if no defects found, bout the best you can do UNLESS it has a manual regen app in the system, company I know has to do a lot of high idle time, & do the 'forced' regen. parked. sometimes takes a long while.

My vote is Seafoam. Works great, but if there is lots of carbon, it may take more than one treatment.

Even the engines that use DEF can have carbon deposits in the EGR and SeaFoam has cleaned it out for me. I now put a can in the fuel after every 2nd or 3rd fill up and it hasn't thrown that code in quite a while. I pretty much made me a believer in it.

The best way to avoid that is to not idle the engine. An engine under power creates little to plug that filter. Idling is the worst thing you can do for that. That said, cleaning that filter is regular maintenance and will need to be done regularly. They recomend 250,000 miles for over the road trucks, so for a short run truck you are about right.

My work truck is a 2010 and the filter lasted 220,000 miles. Never let it idle, and I use fuel conditioner about every two weeks summer or winter. BTW, new reman filters are the way to go according to our leasing company and the Freightliner dealer. Mine is used as a delivery truck, drive 60 miles and then spend two hours in town, then drive again.

Sea Foam or Power Services snake oils is what I keep in my fuel. When running my rig, I used a quart of ATF per 100 gallons, before I found about SF or PS products. Never had a problem course I live in TX. and didn't idle.
