Welding question

Anytime I have ever welded on machinery, I've always disconnected the battery. With a tractor having a positive ground I would think it would be wise to.

I've heard of doing that before, mostly back in the early 60's when "alternators" first started showing up.

I've never disconnected a battery prior to welding, never had a problem.

Besides, wouldn't it make more sense to disconnect the alternator instead of the battery?

I say, weld away! Just be sure the welder ground is connected to the same piece you are welding, not having to go through a bearing or a chassis ground.

Most likely you will not harm a thing by welding and having it connected but it never hurts to disconnect just in case something odd where to happen

no difference just put the ground clamp on the same piece of metal you are welding on and go to it. In other words do not clip the ground to a rear wheel and weld on the front axel.

Easy enough to unhook the battery. I'd do it to be safe !

Guys think they can get away with leaving them hooked up in NEW stuff and I'm here to tell you DO NOT leave them hooked up in something with electronics.

You are more than likely not going to hurt anything on a cub. I only say that because of it being older and the lack of electrical stuff on it. But I would disconnect at least one battery terminal to be on the safe side. No more trouble than its going to be, no sense in not disconnecting it. All this newer stuff, I would always disconnect before welding. Especially anything that has brain boxes or computer stuff on it.

No difference just a good idea to unhook the battery even if having it hooked up might not cause a problem. Always better to be safe then sorry. Also unhook the ground side not the ignition side

Hello grandpa love,

Having a good ground is more important. Use a vise grip to make a good ground connection, and put the welder's ground clamp there. Weld away!

Guido.

What?!?! You saying I shouldn't weld the hole in the tank? With fuel in it. Uggggggggggghgh. Lol. Nah. I'm still scared of welding. Nothing crazy here. Thanks for all the replies. Always get good feedback here.

Think of every risk. Battery, battery gasses, fuel tank, leaking fuel and oil.
Gasoline won't ignite unless vaporized at air/fuel of about 15/1.
Study this ratio online, - don't take my word for it.
If you can't make that judgement don't weld in that area.

I would disconnect it if it was mine just to be on the safe side and because I was careless 3 years ago mounting a flatbed body on a 2005 F250 with the 5.4 engine, I didn't disconnect the battery cable on the truck and welded on the truck frame some new body mounts for the flatbed to sit on, it burnt out electronic fuel pump, 3 coils, and ruined the fuel gauge in the instrument panel, since then I play it safe when welding on vehicles or equipment
