I am adding a 1973 IH Loadstar grain truck to my farm insurance policy, and the agent needs a "cost of vehicle when new" to cover a vehicle more than 40 years old. I figure some of you probably bought a new grain truck in the early 1970s, gas engine, 16 foot bed with hoist, and can search your gray-matter archives to remember what you paid for it. My WAG was $5000.

In an unusual turn of fate for me, by adding this truck to my policy, I qualify for a multi-policy discount I did not have before, which is more than the cost of insurance on the truck: subtraction by addition!!

Thanks for any help you can provide. K

Cant get you back to '73 but in the fall of 1976 I bought a brand new IH 1700. 404 gas, 5 and 2, 14 1/2 foot Midwest bed and hoist. Had the upgrade cab interior, chrome bumper and stripes. Was just over $10,000,00 OTD.

I was selling GMCs in early
70's. I guess between 8.000-
10,000 total with a bed and
hoist installed.
It's probably not going to
affect your premium much
regardless.

WOW. One nice truck! Thanks for the info.

I guess I have the 14.5 foot box, I measured it at the box sides and the bed and guessed they rounded up, since I had never seen one advertised as 14.5 feet. Probably made a difference then.

Mine has the black painted bumper, stripped, not equipped interior, AM radio, only one sun visor even.

Beware!!! If this truck got totaled they would offer you less than $500 due to age and book value!!! Talk to your agent about agreed value (doubt you can use antique as its in use).

I can't remember now if they went by
platform length or inside the box? Would
have been about a 6" differance.

Just worked on a customer's '73 Loadstar 1600. Very clean, well kept truck. He told me he bought it new, chassis was $3500 and 16 foot
stake dump was $2000 installed. It is a 345, 4 speed, with a 2 speed rear, and slower than molasses. He said prices for trucks were all
over the board at that point, only bought this one because he felt he was getting a good price. He has a lot of well kept, one owner
equipment. He is known around here for how good his older equipment looks.
