I know it's off topic but I just want to rant a little.I received my drivers license renewal and now all CDL holders have to take either their birth certificate or passport for proof of who they are.I have been a licensed driver for 60 years and now I have to prove who I am.I assume this a Federal thing I don't know.I wonder if I just took in a copy of my light bill if that would suffice,I think you get my drift.

This rule has been in effect for several years now it is not "new". They are trying to stop illegals from getting CDLs.

I'm OK with the proof of who I am, that's just common sense now days. In Arkansas we now have to take a course in identifying human trafficking. On the surface that sounds OK but I can see some of these idiots turning in church buses and boy scout vans. I didn't renew my CDL this time. It's the 1st time in over 40 years that I haven't been legal to drive commercially.

....Just curious here, but isn't your driver's license an official form of ID? Now they want more?

Interesting. So far, I haven't needed more ID to renew my CDL. ...But then I'm not a professional trucker, either.

Having just renewed my Class A, with current medical exam on file for interstate driving, when at DMV 2 weeks ago, the woman at the information counter asked if I had my birth certificate, but did not want to read it. They wanted the same kinds of proof if you applied for a NYS enhanced license, think I used a telephone bill and something else besides my drivers license. $194.00 for another 8 year membership of the NYS CDL EDL club ;)
NYS EDL

Last time I renewed mine I had to have that info so not a new thing or at least not new here in Missouri but the nice thing it once it is done it is done. Bad thing was it cost me around $30 to send to Alabama to get a new copy of it. But one would think that after spending 6 years in the U.S. Navy and being classified as a D.A.V. one would not need stupid stuff like that. Oh and it was not just for a CDL it was for them all no matter what you drove

I did have an imsulin exemption cdl until I had a mini stroke. The cardilogist, neurologist, and opthamologist had released me but my wet behind the ears primary care dr would not pass me. So here in IL I went to a J50 license that has limitations I can live with. I know I had to supply a copy of my birth certificate but I don't remember if it was then or prior to that. There was so much paper work with the cdl.

Maybe the mexicans are driving for J B Hunt now. Some years ago, one driver said they were hauling geese to FL. They could haul them cheaper than they could fly.

I just renewed my CDL in Minnesota and had to provide a birth certificate, they told me it was a one time thing. Good or bad I don't know, good people will obey the law, bad people won't bother.

kcm.MN I think that your drivers license being a form of Official identification is part of the reason for needing more proof of your identity.

The gov. is cutting elder people from making a living. I've had a CDL for 50/60 years, now I can't go over 100 miles even though I'm farm registered in Texas.

Hadn't heard of that. Didn't have to do it when I renewed in 2015. Next one due in 2019. Maybe then.
I don't know why I keep it up. Haven't needed it for 30 years. Still keep my MC endorsement after 37 years of not owning a bike too. Dunno why.

Go and get your FBI background check. My 1956 birth certificate was not good enough, you have to have a Certified Copy of your birth certificate.(CDL Hazmat) You have to have a birth certificate to get you first license in Missouri and now ever renewal.(so you can get on an airplane and a way to get more money from us)

When your state goes to an 'enhanced' license (with a chip in it, like a passport has) Homeland Security wants the issuer to verify your identity.

If it is enhanced, it can be used to cross borders in North America.

Last dew times, I used a passport for the hazmat background check and prints. Brought the paper from homeland security for the proof of citizenship. Worst part is I have to drive 150 miles to the nearest hazprint location.

Have IL C lic good for 26000lbs. What to use my goose neck to haul old tractors. Pulling it with 1 ton Ram. Must get CDL if over the 26000lbs. But I can not use a like or same vehicle trailer combination for driving test. Must use full blown semi and then required to get air brake endorsement. Guess I'll just keep the C and stay under the 26000 limit. Illinois DMV is really messed up.

Just got mine a week or so ago.

Needed a official birth certificate to get my finger prints.
Once the back ground check was done it was off to the DMV.

Take the written test; actually its on a computer now; like I do every 4 years.
Passed that so I think it is smooth sailing now when she tells me I need 2 forms of ID.
I hand her my birth certificate and TWIC card. A TWIC is a federal picture ID for those that do not know.
She tells me this will not do. They want proof of residency not proof of who you are.
I tell her I got my truck registration. It has my name and address.
She says we got that right here in the computer; so that will not work.
She was looking for a electric bill; credit card bill; Loan bill.
Something recent that has your name and address on it.
Luckily I had just check the mail on my way to DMV and had 2 bills with me in my truck.
She took a land loan bill I had just got and a paper where they had just sent me a new credit card.
This proved I was still getting mail at my address so most likely lived there.

Supposable it is a new federal standard to make sure you reside in the state where you are getting your CDL.

Now here is a added kicker. Our license always expired on our birthday 4 years later.
She tells me this new license is good for 6 years.
When I get the new license it shows it is good for 4 years and 11 months so I questioned it.
She figured out it is good for 6 years OR the day your federal haz mat background expires.
So since the background check is only good for 5 years and I had got it a month earlier it knocked it down to 4 years and 11 months.

I'm sure it's coming, but not yet in Kansas.
I got mine renewed about two weeks ago. I needed my old driver's license and one other piece of proof that I exist. I used a returned check from my bank.
To prove that's it's a small world, the lady behind the DMV counter said she had relatives and used to party at my home town....40 years ago.
I know exactly what relative she was talking about and I'm almost positive I drove this lady (well, at the time she was a teenager) home an hour away from my home town after that dance. Again, 40 years ago.

I was told once you are in Missouri system your covered and no need for the birth certificate but yes you have to have it at least once. Been in the Missouri system since way back before 1980 but still had to have it a few years back

I can't believe all the "hoops" you guys have to go through to get and keep a CDL.
I'd of never thought it was hard at all from all the lost "truckers" stopping in here at work asking for directions. Or at least trying to ask as they do not speak English and don't understand it either.

If they would just arrest the guys selling them on the street corner in Chicago they wouldn't be getting them. Detroit also.
didn't have to do this the last time I renewed mine. Good till 18, may not need it by then.

Just did mine here two weeks ago and did the title change from my one daughter's name into mine while we try and find a buyer for it . They did not ask me for one and i went and got the new plate stickers for my one ton an the durqango and now the sebring . And IF it would have been needed then trust me Wicked Wanda would have been screaming for it . so i got the CDL (classA) renewed title transfer and plates for three viechical's for five years and it did not cost me a dime . And i don't have to deal with Wicked Wanda for five years if i live that long .

This was all mandated by the Fed's after 9-11.
It's taken this long for most states to comply.
IL & Mo. was one of the last to do so only after The Fed's
Did some serious arm twisting.(Cut Funds).

It's a one time deal.
When I renewed mine four years ago I didn't need it.

Now next month when I go to renew my CDL I need to take ID.

Tom

I guess the arrogance and stupidity of politicians and law makers will never cease to amaze me. Crooks, lawbreakers and terrorist types could not care less whar laws are passed. Don't bother them a bit.

You guys with your righteous indignation, "Well I was in the Navy and you'd think they'd blah blah blah," don't realize that ANYBODY can make the same claims.

It doesn't matter how long you've had the license or what you've done in the past or if you go to church every Sunday. The guy who's stealing your identity KNOWS all that, and is USING it to steal your identity.

If they give you the benefit of the doubt and go on your word that you are who you say you are, they may well be giving an identity thief that benefit of the doubt.

This might be an inconvenience, but for a change, the government is actually doing something to protect you.

I had to bring a birth certificate to my last renewal. A real pain in the neck - or maybe a bit lower...

Here is the thing that gets me. A birth certificate is nothing more than a piece of paper with some printing, a seal, and a few signatures on it. There is nothing on it that connects it directly to me. Not one single piece of proof that it is actually MY birth certificate. It only proves that somebody was born and named by the name you are using. It would be easy to forge since it does not contain one single piece of evidence connecting it to the person holding it.
A 17 year old teenager could go to the county clerk's office, and get anybody's birth certificate and use it to buy tobacco or liquor.

Now, if it had contained a footprint, fingerprint, or other positive ID to connect it to a person, I would have more faith in it as a form of ID.

My birth certificate has two foot prints and finger prints on the back in the allotted spaces. 1950 vintage.
That said you would think my Conceal Carry card would be enough.
I mean, you go through all these back ground checks and more to get it.

In Georgia all drivers license require birth certificate, ss card and two monthly bills (utilities) proving residents. If you're a married woman and all bills are in the husband name proof of marriage.

thats the reason basically, too many people driving trucks who should not be, and too many illeagles who get licenses in sanctuary states, even thought they can barely understand the material, also lost truckers are sometimes the victim of drive by gps, systems which, the farther west you go the more inaccurate it is, even in the pickup ive been dumped in a residential area when my destination is nowhere near one, low bridges are not mentioned either, people need to go back to paper maps, specifically aimed at the trucking community, which will have most of the stuff, problem there is too many younger ones cant understand a map, there never taught,

I've been reading this and similar threads with great interest. It amazes me how, as a nation, we are requiring more and more trucks and truckers to be on the roadway as we keep buying more and more from online. Yet, the demands to be a trucker continue to climb. ...Sure makes for an interesting drama!!

And what RedGreenGuy said about pulling tractors over the 26K cap....I've been wondering why I haven't heard "more" people speak up about that! I guess there's not too many out there who fall into that group.

Nothing to speak up about for me. I went to my local DMV here in NH to get my CDLA around 12 years ago. I had had a CDLB for many years. I took the written test, and was scheduled for the driving test. I went with my 11,600 SRW Super Duty, my 22,400 dual tandem gooseneck, and friend with a CDLA. The examiner checked my, and my friend's licenses, checked the reg for both truck and trailer, checked data plate for both, and then we went for a ride. No big deal, but my friend said that after the examiner and I left, a bunch of guys that were waiting expressed surprise about using an SRW pick-up truck to get a CDLA. I am convinced that the main thing is that people just do not want to read.

Thanks Showcrop, that's interesting! I've wondered for YEARS how someone who fell in the middle went about doing that. So far, you're the first I've heard who didn't have to take their driving test in a larger truck in order to get their license. ...But then, I lead a sheltered life!!

Years ago a lot of people were surprised when I took employees to take their test for CDLB in a one ton straight box truck too. Like I said, most guys just don't want to read.
