The original subject was "Re: Stacking Round Bales".

Hi rrlund,
I know this is an old thread, but I gained lots of info from it and was inspired by your barn and stacking set up. Will you forward me any information about your barn design, what you might change, drainage suggestions, how much snow you get in your region, the safety of stacking 4 bales high on end, and any other thoughts?

I would like to stack 4 high on end, and be able to stack and remove them from one open side of the 50 x 100 barn. I envision five 20' bays, which will make organizing several different forage types easier.

Thanks a lot,
Steven

Mine's 40x100 with 10 foot bays. I went with 16 foot sidewalls, but you'd be way better off with 18. My barn has settled in the ground over the years. I can only get them 4 high in about half of it now. It's build on just a slight slope, probably 18 inches lower ground on one end.
I laid down the old blue tarps that I used to use to cover stacks, then put a thin layer of gravel over it. I don't know that I'd change anything except to make it 2 feet higher.
You saw the Worksaver BaleHand that I use to stack didn't you?

Thank you so much for the reply. I did see the Worksaver Balehand. I see they now have one that rotates.

Take care!

I stacked 4x4 hay bales on end, 3 high, in my barn for many years. best base I came up with was a layer of second hand wooden shipping pallets to provide an airspace above a gravel floor. If you are stacking 3 or 4 high on end, make sure they are 100% dry, or the bales act as 'chimneys' drawing heat and damp upwards and condensing and moulding on the top surfaces! (or maybe that's just in Scottish conditions!!)

I have stacked thousands of bales on end with a two pronged bale fork like the one in the picture. I use a grapple for wet wrapped bales, but find the spear quicker for dry hay.

Randy, how about a few pitchers of your floor setup. Mine is dirt and I lose a bit of material on the bottoms.
