Ford industrial 4 cyl. Solid state dist. Checked cam sproket and crank sproket for timing marks every thing lines up. Timing belt good. Heres the
problem timing is 20 degrees off. Back fire through carb, sooty plugs in just a very short time of running. Acts like the timing is way off and
running very rich. Turned down fuel micture but does not help. All the basics have been checked several times. Any sugestions?
Should add compresion is 140 145. Im thinking distributor is shot.

Where does the distributor drive? Off the cam, or does it have an auxiliary shaft in the block?

If aux shaft, check whatever drives that.

If the ignition timing has retarded itself, and the distributor housing has not turned, pull the distributor, check for a binding shaft, sheared drive pin, something loose about the weights, etc.

If this is a 70's-80's era ignition, with the aluminum box, IIRC some of those had a timing retard circuit for starting. Been many yeas though...

It sat for about two years without being ran. Then i had t o get it running it never has ran right after sitting. This is a welder generator and belongs to the company i work for.
