Cut worm problem in the garden ......

The cut worms really hammered us this year ..... even after reseeding and up here, you can only do that once if you're lucky with the short growing season. Carrots survived (sometimes they've got hit in the past) but this year it was the chard and the beets .... not much there at all, they just seem to wipe a whole row out almost overnight when the young tender seedlings are tiny and just coming out of the ground. Years back, a friend told me to put coal ashes in the rows when I seeded, it seemed to work it didn't do a thing this year. I've never tried any chemical control. Not sure if those cut worms are in the soil already come spring time or if the butterflies lay those eggs during the current season. Anybody in the YT group have any advice I might try next year?

Plant Giant Mustard Greens in your garden this Fall as a cover crop and good eating too, once tilled in next Spring they tend to keep a lot of pests out. Also never let the old vegetables
plants stay in the garden over the Winter disk or till it up and plant some cover crop if not mustard this Fall.

I know you have too many plants to do this but I sircle my plans with pices of aluminum4" high and long enough to go around the plant, cut worms crawl up to the plant and then burrow down and thenattack the plant. Haven't lost a plant since doing this

That's how dad did it when we were kids, said the wire prevents them from choking the plant. Not sure what has changed but he has not done that in 30 years and never had a problem.

The eggs are on last years plants after many life cycles during the year.

Cleaning the garden of vegetation in the fall will help.

Tilling it in the fall will also help.

Hey how do you get rid of Bull Elk's eating my potato vines! HeHe, guess I need to share!

x2, I get rid of all garden plants. I use front loader and remove them. Put garden plants in a special compost pile used for flower beds, which next year I'll find tomatoes growing in flower beds. I haul in new compost for garden next year, which is breaking up my hard clay.

So far no cut worms. Only problems are rabbits. Discovered rabbits love red clover more than other garden plants, including pepper plants. Next year I'm planning to put red clover between rows.
