1951 John Deere B starting issues

I restored my father's '51 B a few years
ago. It runs well, but I was going through
batteries like crazy. I just learned about
polarizing the regulator, but before doing
that I had been jumping it with my truck (12
volt, of course). Now it won't turn over at
all, even when jumped. What should I check?

#1 you do not polarize the VR you polarize the generator.
#2 if it is 6 volts I hope you not jumping right to the battery or if you are your lucky the 6 volt battery did not explode in your face.
#3 use a heavy set of jumper cables and hook up a good ground with one and then jump right to the starter stud and see if it spin over there.

My guess is if it has the bottom starter it is a bad switch pull that dust cover and test it out.

Also if it is 6 volts and the battery is dead or very low it will not start if your jumping it the correct way off 12 volts as in right to the starter not across the battery

Follow Old's advice and do not jump a 6 volt battery with 12 volts. Think of battery acid blowing up in your eyes when the top blows off the six volt battery. If you do jump, remove the cables from the battery first and clamp the jumper cables to the battery cables when they are off the battery. Jocco too has a good suggestion. The starter switch consists of a short copper bar that touches two copper buttons to make the starter spin. The copper button on the starter frame and in the switch housing can become worn so far the copper bar can't touch it any more. If the bar can't touch those two buttons the starter won't spin. Very common problem.

I have seen oil and water in that starter box ruin he switch too. The lever should move the drive out as well as push the switch buttons.
