Chevy 6.6 duramax code

Hello

My friend called me to tell me he has an egr code. Jts a 2011 Chevy with the 6.6 engine. I am not sure but it is a low mileage engine. I would guess at 50 K? If I recall correctly the tranny needs to come out to get at the EGR?
Sounds like an early valve failure to me. I am thinking may be wiring or loose mount? Any suggestions where to look? He is in Missouri and is losing fuel mileage, power seems o.k.

Guido.

Most likely the EGR cooler is plugged due to excessive idle time. There is nothing on that system that is going to be fixed on the road. His best bet is to take it to someone familiar with it and get out his platinum card, modern diesels are expensive.

Hello Sprint 6,

He knows that it won't be cheap. Just ticked off at the low mileage failure!
The after treatment system is working now,

(quoted from post at 06:19:58 07/08/17) Aren't emissions systems warranted longer than the normal vehicle warranty?

I was told only the moving parts on the Duramax....the dealer wanted $4500 to extend the warranty beyond 3 years on my 2016.

If he went 50K with no failures on an '11, he did well. '11 is not a banner year the Duramax. First year for a lot of the emission stuff. He would do well to call a dealer and check coverage first. They did extend the warranty on the DEF system and NOx sensors, possibly there may be some EGR coverage as well.

Emissions parts may carry specific time and mileage warranty.

My Ram 2008 lists some parts up to 8 years and 100000 miles. Look in your Operators Manual or in my case separate Warranty Information booklet.

Hello Sprint 6,

I think he said that the warranty won't cover it. He had a hard time with the after treatment too. He kept topping it off and would set a code. I told him to wate for the service light. He must have listened, as he reports all is well with it. He is a hard sale. I offered him my code reader. He thought it would blow it up!!!!!)
He now has a harbor freight reader, that is how he reads and erases the codes. Now he want help, go figure!

The EGR valve is not too difficult to replace, but if it's the EGR cooler bypass valve or the rear cooler, they aren't very fun. The best way is remove the cab for those, otherwise the trans has to come out according to GM service info. I have done them by tipping the cab. Still isn't a cake walk, but it's a lot less work than pulling the trans.

Hello brian,

In another life I would have done it. Turned wrenches for a living. Its like out of my pay grade now.

Guido.

Hello Roger,

Its my friend's truck, I guess he knows if it out of warranty. Plenty go arounds with the afterburner, he says that is o.k.

Guido.
