DANG SPAMMERS!!

This IDIOT just signed up tonight, but has an amazing 28 posts!!

I can't help but wonder what kind of ignorance it takes to keep doing things like this. If someone else knows, PLEASE inform me!

There was a lengthy conversation about this kind of stuff not too long ago on another site. Most people seem to think these folks make money from their spamming, and that may be true. However, you really need to look at this from a PC security point of view. Please read this next part carefully - IF YOU CLICK ON THEIR LINKS, YOU COULD SEVERELY COMPROMISE YOUR COMPUTER!!

By clicking on their links, you're going to some unknown site. And, they may, in fact, be delivering the intended product or event, but that's just the start. While you're there, one or more of several things could be happening. Some of these things are:
1) they can upload malware to your PC without your knowing
2) they can potentially gain access to your PC, and search through your files for private or financial information, etc.
3) they can hack into your email, and possibly even use your PC to attack your friends - hey, why would YOU send some strange email? But by then it's often too late.

There's more things also, but can't think well right now. Hurting a lot tonight, so can't sleep. Anyway, PLEASE do not give these people power over you, or the ability to attack your friends and family through your PC. And all it takes is simply clicking on one of their links! And trouble is, it may also be a sleeper kind of thing, so that by the time bad things start happening, you don't remember clicking on the spammed link.

If necessary, make a note to yourself and stick it on your screen - [color=blue:f9c881b482]"DO NOT CLICK ON SPAMMER LINKS!"[/color:f9c881b482]

The big thing lately is "ransomware" where they encrypt your files and then demand a sum of money to decrypt them. In that case there is definitely a profit motive.

Other sites either steal or get you to willingly divulge your personal information so that they can steal your identity. Again, pure profit motive there.

People that are not always thinking clearly are the most vulnerable. Maybe elderly, medicated, or just plain lacking in common sense. If you have someone like that in your life please keep an eye out for them.

If I remember right, Chris from YT, once said that no should reply to any spammer post...

I think he said that if anyone replies to them at all - then it lets them know it is a valid IP (or
something like that).

Chris said the best thing to do is:
1. Do not reply in any fashion.
2. Just use the "Report to Moderator" button to report the spammer.

If you open a post and it has a whole lot of web links in it... do NOT click on any of them.

Sometimes there will be a long description (usually written with poor grammar), advertising either something illicit or just advertising something odd for a tractor website.

(quoted from post at 05:12:12 06/29/17) ok.....im new here but want to learn; what are they posting?
In this particular instance (and what has been on here lately that I've seen) is that they advertise to click on a link to see such-and-such sports event. Often they'll use the word "Live", as if it's happening as they type.

I have never clicked on those, as I'm NOT a sports nut!! And for a long time, I simply thought they must be getting some sort of kickbacks from sending people to the links. As I've grown older and wiser, I've come to better understand that these folks may in fact be showing the games (or whatever) that they are advertising. ...But maybe they don't - I haven't a clue. Anyway, as mentioned before, they can gain access to your computer WITHOUT YOU KNOWING IT OR AGREEING, as simply clicking on their link is agreement enough. From there, they can gain some amount of access to your PC (depending on your security settings and additional software), load malware programs to disable or hack your computer, or simply browse through looking for specific information. My guess is there probably are actual games on the links, as the longer you're on their site (on THEIR COMPUTER!!), the longer you give them access to YOUR computer! If they wish, they may choose to "save you" for another time, like saving dessert, and instead use your computer to gain access to other computers who know and trust you; like friends and family. If you have higher access or trust on someone else's system, then they can use that to their advantage to hack into computers that likely wouldn't click on their spammed links. So even if you click on a link and even if you watch a game, and even if nothing happens to you that you're ever aware of, you still may be unknowingly giving them easier access to your friends and loved ones....and banks, and job, and any place else that trusts you (your computer).

In short, just don't click on the links.

When this idjit was on, he had made 28 posts, the last of which was about an hour before I was on. Then he came back and posted one more, just to tick me off. I know it was a person and not a program, as it was in some threads, but not others. It was in the most likely threads to be seen. He(?) even had the gall to post TWO links in the Site Comments section. And if that's not bad enough, even spammed in the Memorials and Remembrance section!! That is SSOOOOO not cool!! Shows that they not only have no respect for us, but also have no respect for our friends who have passed!!

If it hints to ANY topic and you do not know the person posting, you should not click on the link! Someone could place what appears to be a normal URL (like I often do), but instead of going to YouTube or Amazon, it goes to some other strange link. Could be some sneaky sob getting their foot in the door by "acting" like a good, caring member rather than the spammer they are. And as I stated, someone clicking on the link may not even see anything bad until it's far too late to do anything about it.

For people that know how to, you can set up a VPN, or a Virtual Private Network, that prevents ANY spammer from gaining ANY access to your computer! You can go to all the nastiest sites on the net and, when (not "if"!!) your PC starts acting funny, you can simply wipe away the VPN and start over without any harm to the rest of your machine or software. Another thing would be to have an Internet Only computer that has backup installation discs. If/when your computer gets hacked or downloads a virus, you can simply reformat the PC and start from scratch. A VPN offers basically the same protection, but allows you to keep the online portion separate from the offline portion. ...There's a little more to it than that, but that's the best I can offer.
