Where is the serial number plate on a 5500 Ford backhoe?

On the ag version, it's on the bellhousing, just above and to the rear of the starter. I would expect it to be there on an industrial, too. Depending on the year, and if it's still there, it may also have a foil sticker under the hood, above the battery.

I think it could also be on a label on underside of RH hinged hood
