Oliver 880 pto reinstall problem

I had the pto out of our Oliver 880, reinstalled it, now there is a "chatter" when engaging the pto. The only thing different is the engine clutch disc and pressure plate. The engine has been out of the frame and put back in as well. Your thoughts appreciated!!

How long was it apart? Is there some rust on the plates in the PTO clutch that wasn't there before you tore it down? Replacing the main clutch shouldn't effect it. That PTO shaft goes in a hub in the center of the flywheel.

It has been apart for a while, there could be some rust. However, when putting the three bolts in to bolt the pto unit to the tractor, it does not seem to want to pull up easily. The first attempt resulted in the inner bearing failing, but, they may have been my fault. I'm not sure. Don't want to ruin many 30 dollar bearings.

Hmmm, sounds like the splines aren't all the way in the hub,but I don't know what would stop them. Did it slide right in to the hub and the splines for the pump drive? Usually it's all or nothing,I can't figure it not going all the way.

Yes, that part went well. I just had to turn the shaft a little to get the splines lined up. It's the last 1/16 - 1/8 of an inch that seems to be an issue.

Surely the block couldn't have been placed just far enough back when placed back in to cause the issue. There is surely more margin for error than that?

Might not be lined up in the hyd pump fully? Try snapping the over center clutch on the PTO in, so the PTO will be engaged. If it is disengaged whne you are trying to slide it in and turning it yo line up the splines, you're only turning the PTO clutch assembly, not the shaft. You can do it by hand if you're strong ebough just by pushing on the collar. Then try pushing the shaft in while turning the clutch assembly. Splines just aren't quite lined up, the only thing turning your PTO is the splines jammed against the hub the way you have it now. It should slide in easy, all the way to where the 3 bolt retainer casting faces up to the PTO assembly on the tractor. Of course you know that you have to evenly tighten up the bolts since they are too long to tighten them all the way up one at a time since there isn't enough room.

I can give that a try. It seems odd that it goes in so well until the last little bit. It only takes a little time.

Yes, the cast case was also removed. PTO was pulled first by removing the three retaining bolts that attach it to the gear case.

Mr. Schwiebert, you da man! The pilot hole that holds the bearing was ever so slightly off center from the hole in the back of the rearend housing. I loosened the gear case, had to lift it slightly, tightened it back up. PTO is back together, and sounds just fine.

Thank you!!
