Leroy (I think you're the horse guy), on the Tractor Talk board Larry at the corner posted pix of an Oliver horse-drawn mower. In looking at the brochure I notice the tongue is offset to the sickle bar side. Seems to me the horse on that side would have to be pretty skinny, wouldn't he? kelly

I am not actually a horse man. I just work with the Amish on machinery. But the first mower I used was a David Bradley on robber that when Dad bought it new came with both the horse toung and tractor pole. Never saw the horse toung on it tho. The first piece of machinery I bought on its own was a Deere No. 2 mower that I used for several years. Yes the toung if set to the right and I have no idea why. Just the way all the horse mowers are. I would guess that it would make where the horse walks in the area the swath board layed clean but I just don't know. Have not been around when they were being used. At home the horses left for good when I was only 6 years old so I do not even remember them. That mower in his pictures is unique in that the cycle has only a 2" strock where the standard is 3". There was one for sale at the Portland, In. swap meet for the last couple of years but he found no buyers. Portland is just at the south edge of a large Amish community.

The pole offset is because most of the draught or drag of the mower is caused by the cutter bar being all on one side. If the pole was in the centre the inside horse would be pulling all the load. As it is the inside horse walks just clear of the standing hay.

Leroy the two inch stroke on the Oliver mowers made them cut very well, better than the other horse mowers. Kind of an early double cut type of design. I know that Oliver where that way because my Grand father that was the blacksmith kept the sections for the narrower cut. The Amish may not buy them as the parts could be harder to find these days.

Leroy,,sorry I couldnt scan pictures,,I Posted the pictures of it with my camera,,rr lund will probably scan it for you when it arrives at his home...

Okay, exspurts have it your way. I'm glad y'all know all about it. Sorry I know so little. I'll be cutting hay with my horses and number nine McCormick Deering tomorrow morning. When are you next gonna be using horses and a horse-drawn hay mower? Kelly

Kelly, why get on me? I said I have no idea to your question. All I said is that I grew up with them and after I got to working with the Amish finding them Items that they need that they cannot find close to home. I do know mostly how to repair one and how to use it behind a tractor. I just let the horse use up to the Amish. I just know what they will take and what they will not. And that No. 9 is about the most desired mower made followed by the No. 7 and after that the John Deere Big 4, If it is not one of those 3 models forget it, they do not want it.
