IH 656 Trans Issues

I have an IH 656 diesel tractor that had been sitting for a long period of time. I have finally got it running; however, there appears to be an issue with the transmission. When I put the trans in forward or reverse the tractor will not move, but while "bogg down" as if torque is being applied and the tractor is trying to move. Is there anything I can check external (filters, brakes, etc) to possibly get the trans to operate and the tractor moving before having to go inside?

Leave the tractor in neutral. Let the clutch out. Does it move? If so the tractor is stuck in whatever gear it tries to move in.

With the engine off, try all the gears. One of the three shift gates will just flop, instead of clicking in and out of gear like the other two.

The three shift gates are R-1 on the left, 2-3 in the middle, and 4-5 on the right.

If that isn't it then it is most likely your are seized up, or maybe you just forgot to unlock them? Not locked? Take them apart and clean them out. It's pretty simple.

If you determine that is stuck in a gear pull the battery out below and the steering wheel. Look in
there you will see three vertical rods attaching to three pivot levers. These are part of mechanisms
that transfer shifter motion to the trans. Move the shifter around and try to determine which rod
controls which gear. (It has been a while but I think the rods are opposite of the lever shift gates.
So the right rod controls 1st and reverse) All the rods have an up, center and down position.
When all the rods are in the center position the trans should be in neutral. You may need a small
pry bar to help you out. Also if the tractor is not on the level where it can be rocked back and forth
you may need to find a SAFE way to jack up one rear wheel to allow slack in the gear train so the
gears will shift to neutral. There are probably a good number of parts in the system with to much
wear, common problem on this model. Good luck!

You are correct; I failed to mention the tractor is a Hydrostatic transmission. I am still in need of some further guidance.

In that case since its been sitting a long time, lets see if the brakes are locked or frozen. Have you been able to move the tractor at all? Can you roll it or tow it or are the rear wheels locked? Put the high/low range lever (right hand side) in neutral and then try putting it in forward & reverse and see it it still bogs down. The brakes are all mechanical disc brakes and pretty easy to get at and work on if thats the only problem. Let us know.
