Odd problem rotor 180 out

So the step son has thus Toyota truck that he parked over a year ago and he was to lazy to try to fix it. So a gal we know that works in a parts place was here sort of helping him. He by the way does not listen to me when I tell him what to check. Any how I tell her they need to check that the rotor is pointing where it should be when #1 is at top dead center. Well the gal pulled the rotor off and was trying to put it back on the way it had come off which was turned 180 out. I looked at it and check where the flat spot was and where it was on the distributor shaft. I then put it on correctly and she tells me it was pointing this way not the way it is now. I have her put the cap back on and i then try to start it and sure enough it fires right up. So have any of you ever seen a rotor some how spin it self 180 out. The 2 of them are right now on there way to town to get a new cap and rotor for it so maybe that will fix it
 
Had that happen many years ago on a farmall H but it was because I put the rotor on incorrectly. Chewed up to rotor and the inside of the cap pretty good.
 
On this one the rotor had been on it who knows how long and was there when he got it so not sure why of how it got turned 180 out but it did. I when I put it back on check to see if it was tight and it is not as tight as it should be so I told them new cap and rotor
 
When the rotor got 180 out if was being driven at around 65 MPH and outfo the blue it started to run bad then died
 
I can't imagine it could turn without breaking, unless it is the soft plastic type. Even then there should be some evidence of it turning or being forced on wrong.

Some have a spring steel spacer/keeper that goes up inside the rotor. Maybe it broke and fell out (if equipped)?

hat he said, plus it turned exactly 180, not 30, 80, 150?????
 
The rotor on my Mazda will fit 180 degrees off. Only engine I ever came across where rotor would go on two different ways. It didn't run that way though as I had been doing some work on it , don't remember what it was now but had cap and rotor off, stuck it back on and it didn't fire right up. Made some weird noises though so I suspected it was from the area I had been into. That was about 100K miles ago.
 
on A ford once let onr tank run dry backfired and sheared pin holding drive gear to shaft. rotor was turned Put 1/8 inch welding rod in for pin and went home
 
The rotor on a Geo Tracker can be put on 3 ways which is odd but can be done. The distributor shaft is a triangle so you can put the rotor on 3 different ways but of course it will only run if put on right
 
Where do you read exactly at?? I used 180 as a reference because that is about where it was and since I did not take the rotor off my self I could only go by what the gal told me and she said it was pointing this way which put it at about 180
 
It was just one of the common plastic rotors no metal parts to it and no it was not cracked or broken in any way but if one looked close you can see where it may have slid up a bit and the nub that should sit on the flat of the distributor shaft looks like it was sort of wiped off as in part of it sort of rubbed off as if force to turn
 
old, you did say "turned 180 out" in your original post, no "about" about it.

Like everyone else though I know of no way that a rotor could turn itself 180 out without something being obviously broken. Are you sure that nobody tried messing with it after it died?

as one melt down once from bushing freeze up.
 
Hey if you cannot answer my post in such a way to show respect for another person then please do not answer my posts ever again. O do not ditch you in any way but you sure has heck ditch me all the time and I have never done any thing to you to deserve the way you treat me here. Almost every time you answer one of my post you attack me in some way or form and there is no rime or reason for you to do so other then you do not like me and I have never given you a reason to be the way you are
 
I used 180 as a reference ya it could have been any where from say 130 to over 200 out and since I was not the one to pull the rotor off I have to estimate how far out it was. Shoot on a rotor one could never have it 100% correct as to how far out if was since there is no real reference points to go by in a distributor. As for some one messing with it NO. My driveway is a mile long and for some one to have the balls to do something like that they would have to be stupid LOL.
Back when this happened over a year ago the boy was driving it and had a friend with him. They told me it all at once seemed to start loosing power then died and would not start back up. It was towed home and I looked at it and I told the boy it sounds like the timing had jumped and that is where he left it and did not even try to do what I told him to check
 
Yes I know what you said and I also know you seem to enjoy attacking me when you answer one of my post so as I said please do not answer me any more that way you do not have to put up with me or me put up with your simple as that
 

okay.. top dead center,, rotor 180 degrees out..


would that not mean that your simply on the exhaust stroke instead of the fire stroke,, and yes, the rotor would be exactly 180 out... its a 4 stroke engine, not a two stroke... so on one revolution the rotor points at number one, on the next revolution, the rotor will point at the opposing cyl from number one.

If it started running bad before it died and you say the rotor was about 180 off I get the idea it was slipping more out of time until it finally was out of time too far for it to run. Then as the engine was coasting down, whatever drives the distributor kept slipping till it was about 180 off when the engine finally came to a stop. I wonder how the distributor is driven? Off the oil pump or? Just thinking out loud as I type this.
 
The number 180 is just a number I used to say about how far out it was and since I did not pull the rotor off I had to guess as to where it really was. What was the odd part is, is it did this when it was being driven and it happened pretty much all at once and from what I was told it started to loose power then died and then would not start back up. The rotor rotating out of place is what is the odd part. I have seen distributor gear strip or the pin that holds the gear shear but NEVER seen a rotor that slipped out of place
 
Distributor on this Toyota 22R engine is driven off the over head cam shaft. Cam timing is just fine and distributor timing is fine but some how the rotor slipped on the distributor shaft and when it did so moved about 180 out. So if one tried to start the engine it would back fire which would be what it should do with it being so far out of time. Yesterday when I found this I put the old rotor back on like it should have been and it fired right up but I told him that he needs a new cap and rotor period which is now on it and it runs just fine now
