tube patches

Has anyone ever tried using pieces of inner tube for a patch on a tube? I have a tire that will put holes in a tube in about 2-3 years with other little marks, that look like a mouse had chewed on the tube. Only problem is the tube has been in the tire since coming out of the package.
This is on an 18.4-38. The inside of the tire looks like some of the inside coating is coming off the tire inside so it has fibers wearing the tube. not sure just how to do a better description. Am trying to use some old tube to cover the spots on the tube. One spot is about 5wide x 15 inches long.

Boots are to thick and will not stretch with the tube during inflation. Patches are not big enough. I would have nearly the cost of a tube in patches for it.

I have dealt with this type of problem many times over the years and an easy fix is to take an old tube cut it in such a way that the good tube fits inside the old tube and works like a liner so that the good tube does not touch the tire it self. That way the tube has a cushion so of that protects the tube from the tire. Or in other words cut an old tube down the center area where it would normally but on the rim area and put it in the tire then put the good tube inside the cut tube

I am actually old enough to remember when they sold tire liners, for just what you are talking about. Doubt that you can buy one now but yes a old tube cut would help.

I forgot to say I have in fact used a old tube to make a patch with to fix a hole in a tube but I have a hot patch tool which heats both the tube and patch up real hot so it bonds very well

Thanks guys I have glued some pieces of tube to the tube. I will try that for now and if I have more trouble the tires will be replaced with different ones. These are about 50% tread just trying to get the last half of them worn out.

Boots go on the tire casing, not the inner tube. A boot would go right over the rough area of the tire casing and give the inner tube something smooth to slide on when the tire & tube flex.

The boot becomes a part of the casing when installed. They only flex just what the casing flexes and no more. They are made to repair dammaged spots in the casing and they DO NOT go on the tube.

Hi
Yes they do still make tough tubes They are made of thick rubber by Michelin, Klieber, and Firestone to name a few. The biggest problem is they don't cost $60 like the cheap made in China junk, tire patches won't stick to unless you use a nuclear blast to bond them.

The Michelin Agribibs on my chore tractor are junk with the wall starting to break up letting fluid out of one, but the tread is over 1 1/2 inch still. The made in china tube lasts about a month with a patch over the bad spot in the tire and any next bad spot showing area's patched to. since we used the expensive tube in the one it's been good for over a year. The $160 Michelin tube is in stock here for when the other one goes bad to on a weekend when the tire place is shut so I can fit it.
Regards Robert

Cat guy, your tire is shot, probably from running it low, cords pop out of the sidewall. don't plan on carrying big bales too far with it. Replace it rather than fighting it. It will be an endless battle for you.
