custom seed cleaning rate

I acquired a Clipper No. 27 fanning mill last winter complete with a stack of screens. Needs a little repair but nothing major (I think). Neighbor saw it on a trailer in my driveway earlier this year and called me to see if I'd be willing to clean 700 bushels of rye seed coming off field in the next few weeks. He's transitioning to certified organic so it's going to be much cheaper for him to clean seed than buy fresh organic seed for cover crop.

Given I know little to nothing about this machine or how to use it I don't really feel good about charging too much but I don't want to give up a weekend or more of my time for nothing other than maybe some learning about cleaning seed.

What would you charge the guy? We're going to unload from seed tender wagon into fanning mill and auger back into grain truck. No bagging or anything so once it's set up and working good the machines do most of the work.

I do not have an answer as to rates.
I just got a clipper #7 and a clipper
#2b special. Very neat old school
tools of the trade. Just a guess on a
rate, .50 cents to a dollar a
bushel?

(quoted from post at 11:01:49 06/22/17) I would still be interested in it if you want to sell it. I was just wondering what you ever did find out about it. Tom
I think I lost your number. Wanted to come see your set-up and learn how to use the damn thing.

In my area price is anywhere from $1.00-1.50 per bu. Does that machine have brushes on both screens? That is real important as rye heads can plug the top screen without brushes. My 27 does not have them and I would like to find another that does or one for parts to take them out of or even part mine. My number is 608-623-2851 and you are welcome to come look at my setup. There is another poster near me that took a junk rotted up 47 and rebuilt it into a nice machine with lots of updates. In good going where the farmer did a good job with the combine we have cleaned 80-100 bu per hour. I will have almost 50 acres of rye to clean this summer and a few hundred bu of oats as well. Tom

I bought a clipper a few years back. It is
metal, not sure of the model. I was able to
get new screens and brushes from the
manufacturer. I cleaned some rye for cover
crop once and it did great. Just don't get
caught doing RR beans.

If it's a 27, it'll be a two screen machine. You'll want to print off a suggested screen list from At Ferrell -

Download and print off the two screen suggestions. I didn't print all of it because it covers everything to lawn grass to tree seeds. I just printed the few pages for small grain and soybean.

I charged $70 an hour through my 47b plus $1 a mile to drive to the site, but I am going to raise my price this fall. I can go a little faster because I have a second scalping screen, so I can set a course screen first, then a little finer screen second, then the sieve screen to clean out fines. Keep your fan turned up, the fan does a lot of the cleaning, and I think a lot of guys like to keep it low so to not lose as much grain. I'd rather put more light seed on the ground as it makes for a better sample of seed rye.

My machine has three augers - inlet, clean grain, and light grain. The scalpings and fines are caught in buckets. The super light trash blows out the back. I'm planning on mounting a dust collector to make it a less dusty job. I'll route the inlet to suck up the dust as the seed comes out the roll feed hopper. It should also give me a couple more bushel per hour capacity as well.
