early Case IH 1460 Combine, without electric over hydraulic

I am considering upgrading combines a bit, going from my current late model JD 4400 to an early model Case IH 1460. The 1460 does not have the electric over hydraulic header control that everyone seems to recommend. How big of a deal is this? it seems like the price on these models is nearly 50% less than the electric over hydraulic control models. I am looking to cover about 250-300 acres per year. The 1460 has a 17.5 foot 1020 head with it.

my current 4400 is a machine that I really love. It is a great machine that I really like, but capacity is really low, especially in corn. In beans it seams fine. Also, I currently adjust my header height manually with the 4400. My 4400 has the auto header height control, but it just seems so sensitive and it is constantly adjusting, this drives me nuts! I really have no problem adjusting the header height manually and have been doing it for 2 years without a problem. I hear great things about the rotary combines and am trying to work myself that direction.

Will I be disappointed with an early model 1460 without the sought after electric over hydraulic controls? Does a 1460 have a rock trap?

I run an early model 1440 with manual header control and 820 bean head, it seems to work fine for me. If it hasn't been used for a long time, you might have to replace the cable? In corn, you should see a world of difference. Every load I sent to Cargill so far this year has made No. 1. Less than 1% damaged kernels or foreign matter. Just don't run your rotor to fast in corn.

Are you talking about the automatic header height control? Not sure from reading your post. If the 1460 has a rock trap, it will be pretty obvious by looking under the feeder housing. Lever that opens a drop down door the width of the feeder house. I get really good clean corn with my 1660. Never discounted for foreign matter, etc. Rock trap works good. Good machines.

I believe the rock trap was an option back in those days, so you will have to inspect the machine to see if it has one.
If not, I'm sure it could be added from a salvaged machine.

With the "2 stick" machines, the only difference is that having your right hand on the hydro stick which also contains the header up / down rocker switch on the electro / hydraulic machines. Your hand will be on either the hydro stick or the header up/down stick with the older 2 stick machine. We owned both and did not see enough difference to spend extra for the electro / hydraulic. If anything, the "2 stick" machine had more reliable hydraulics.
