Let's blame the millennials

According to the article lets blame the millennails for killing chains like buffalo wild wings, applebees.

I'm not a millennail and I'm not a fan of some of some of these places either.

However, I do enjoy eating someone's else cooking, Texas Roadhouse and Longhorns to name a few.
millennials fault

Another thing hurting the more up scale chains is that fact many people can not afford to eat at the high priced chains. When fast food meals are $5-10 and your talking $15-25 at the chains, money matters.

My wife likes Texas Roadhouse. So for her fifty birthday we eat there with the entire family. The bill averaged $25 a person when all said and done.

Food that taste good would help. Wife and I went to Outback. Years ago food tasted like cardboard. Never went back. Price can also be a problem.

I just went to Applebees for the first time in my life. I am a "Baby-boomer" though. Took my wife, boy, 80 year-old mother-in-law, for Mother's Day. Food was surprisingly good and cost $60 in total for all four of us. Never been to any of the other places. McDonalds is expensive enough. Just about always costs us around $28 for three of us, plus something for our dog. No more "change back from a dollar."

I think maybe some have learned its not that hard to cook certain things,,for example, you can buy lots of chicken and cook it on a tray in the oven,To buy chicken cooked is expensive around here.Pork chops are reasonably priced.lay them on a tray,,throw them in the oven.If you go out and order pork chops they are expensive. How hard is it to cook a hamburger on the grill? But if you go out and buy it its expensive.Even at Mcdonalds,if you buy a burger big enough so you can recognise it ,they are expensive too.

It's far too easy to look at a single issue, and ignore all the rest. A lot of people are struggling with debt, be that medical debt, student debt, or credit card debt, not all of which is to maintain a lifestyle some may consider "excessive". When the wealth of the nation (and the world) is concentrated in a few hands, there isn't a lot left floating around for Joe and Jane Millenial (or Joe and Jane Boomer) to blow 50 bucks to go out to eat. For the last decade or so, going out to eat meant having a sandwich made at home to eat while driving somewhere - moving machinery, hauling livestock to butcher, etc, etc. So blame me as well - I'm over 60.

That goes to show you why, when I was in high school, the ag teacher said that Jerry Knight was the only guy he ever knew who could spend $1.50 at McDonalds and still complain that he was hungry.

Around here in Central Ohio the Texas Road House is by far the best in service ,food and value..I use to like Applebees, but no more,, the food and service got very bad, and the price went up,,I would eat a sandwich on the tail gate before I would go back to one..

Dining out 5 times every week (plus many other lifestyle changes) = spending money unnecessarily = demand for higher wages and so on and so on down the line. The last thing in the equation is jobs lost to other countries which we can't seem to figure out why it happened and expect our politicians to solve the problem. I just finished using a 1-gallon Craftsman MADE IN USA hand-held weed sprayer. Almost 50 years old, all brass sprayer fittings, galvanized tank, still like new (mind you I took care of it). What is now made offshore is a disgrace, it might last for a few years at best, then a guy goes out and buys another one. Nobody else to blame but ourselves (me included) for that happening. Hmmm, did I wander off topic a bit here, not sure ???

I love to eat at buffalo wild wings but the service around here sucks real bad and the food is hit or miss. I drive 30 miles north and get me a box of Blazing wings to go.

Texas Roadhouse went broke here; don't know why but they never seemed to have many customers.

We used to eat lunch out once a week as something different for us to do. One of the first things my Oncologist told me was to stop eating out in restaurant and fast food places. He doesn't want me to get sick for any reason. So we don't eat out anymore.

Growing up on a farm ruined me for eating out. Why go out to eat a steak when we have better meat in the freezer?

I also enjoy eating out and not having to cook lol. In addition to Texas Road House and my favorite fast chain food STEAK N SHAKE we do a lot of eating at American Legions and VFW's and Moose Lodges etc etc all over the USA during our RV road trips plus when at home. In the Legions and VFW and Moose Lodges I like the people, I feel safe, AND THE COST OF DRINKS AND USUALLY FOOD IS MUCH LESS and the food is always pretty good HARD TO BEAT FOR OUR LIKING. We also like the small mom n pops versus the big corporate chains where available. Of course, the majority of food is prepared in our own kitchen but we do enjoy occasional dining out. Some do some don't, to each their own I say.

Texas Roadhouse seems to be an Outback wannabe the steaks are a little cheaper and smaller than Outback. We have a restaurant called Woods Grille, all you can eat with sirloin steak, steamed shrimp and about 60 other dishes all great food.Wife and I can go there for under $30 total.

Nothing cheap about Fast Food anymore. I never cared for Texas Road house. I did eat at an Out Back Steakhouse years ago that I liked. Wife brings a sandwich home for supper about once a week. Sometimes we get a Subway, sometimes an Arby's, and lately we've had a Culver's from the new store just opened. When we travel, we normally eat a meal a day at McDonald's. I still can't decide if I like a BIG Mac or Quarter Pounder better.

Why not blame us, again? We have already been blamed for everything else... And they say we don't take any responsibility for our actions but yet I seem to see every article blaming us for stuff we haven't had a hand in... Just tired of taking the blame for crap we didn't have a hand in. Believe it or not some of us actually have a good work ethic and are trying to make this world a better place.

That's part of it. The requirements to make everything low sodium and fat also made food low taste. I wouldn't think all the blame goes on the millennials. It should go on their parents, they are the ones that aren't giving the 20somethings enough allowance to eat out every meal.

I can't remember when my wife and I ate out.

JD,
Don't you just love the legendary fall off the bone RIBS? Texas roadhouse just built a new and larger place. I have to use call ahead seating or wait 60-90 minutes to get seated. It's by far the most popular place in TH. I give credit to the good food, good rolls, good peanuts, good service and management. Same management for a long time.

David,
I'm the person who is cheap, but I still go to Texas roadhouse. I think the last time I went on a Friday at 5 pm they had an early bird special. Some meals were only $9. Check it out. BYW, I don't drink soda or beer so I just get water, zero calories which I'll make up for that eating the rolls.

I agree, stagnant wage growth has literally taken money from the pockets of those these restaurants are catering to. Property tax increases sales tax, tax tax it all means that people have less to spend. So dining out is OUT. One other factor maybe; If you have been past a soccer park, little league diamonds, soft ball diamonds, you know where the melennials are spending their evenings. So that kills eating out also. just my 2 cents woth gobble

I do blame the millennial's... The ones left there to run the place without adult supervision!

Bad service is the main reason I don't go to chain restaurants, that along with high prices and low quality food.

All my regular dining establishments are home owned, family run, so the money stays in the community. They either run their business like a business, or they go away.

When I'm on the road I seek out the same, stay away from the chains. I can eat there any time, always up for some adventure! Sometimes it's bad, but most time it's good, especially in the small towns where they have to care for the customers they get, not depend on saturation advertising.

been to two different Texas roadhouse restaurants in northern Ohio. both had the best food and service of any restaurant that I have ever been in bar none. you get what you pay for.

A year ago last fall, my wife and I went to the Texas Roadhouse in Lincoln, Nebraska on the evening of our 50th wedding anniversary.

We waited longer than usual for our food, and then a waitress appeared, said there had been a mix-up on orders in the kitchen, and that there would be no charge for our meals when they came. In conversation, we mentioned that it was our 50th anniversary. Shortly after that, the manager appeared and presented us with a $30 gift certificate as an anniversary gift.

Now that's great customer service!

If I'm not mistaken or something has changed, Willie is a part owner of Texas Roadhouse. I have been favorably impressed with the quality of their steaks and the price too. Nobody smokes like Willie...

I might drop in at McDonalds for pancakes in between VA appointments this week. I think I ate out there last year once also. Living high on the hog here.

The chains seem to do well in my area. Most times it is a hour wait to be seated at TGI, Longhorn Steak House and others.
I never cared for Applebees. Some of the local family restaurants are also packed on weekends and reservations are required.
Pizza is also big in the area especially OLD Forge Pizza.

Chick_ Fila is a fast food resturant specializing in chicken. A few years ago they took some position that was politically incorrect and the usual suspects organized a boycott. Some people like me ate there just to spite the usual suspects and in fact the whole episode was some of the best advertising that Chick_Fila ever had. Their food is pretty good for fast food and their wait staff are some of the best trained employees you will find in the fast food industry and other eating places too. They also are closed on Sunday.

I am with you Joneil, raise all beef, chicken, pork on the farm have all my life, you will never imitate the flavor in a steak house

there is no way people wait 60-90 min for a seat, that's why we eat at home and the steak will be a lot better because I know where it came from

Just ate at Longhorn Steakhouse in Wilkes-Barre on Friday night. Wow was it good. First time there.

We had a similar thing in the Texas Roadhouse in St. Cloud, MN last year....extremely long wait time...not cuz of busy...mixup in order...had to repeatedly ask for the beer I ordered...waitress has to place order at bar, and bartender delivers it. Got it at the end of the meal. Waitress called the mgr, who comped our meal and gave us two certs for appetizers at our next visit. Appetizer is almost a meal in itself for us. They work closely with local Viet Nam Veterans of America local association for fundraisers. Didn"t hurt that I had my airborne hat on!

The millennial's are screwed; big time. Top 20% will do OK.

But the rest of them will read about what their boomer parents had and take another swig on the vodka bottle.

Or whatever else they use to numb the pain....

Eating chicken at steak house sounds crazy, but try Logan's crusted parson
chicken. Get the full order, two chicken breasts and share it. That's a double
WOW.

Our Logan's is attached to the Holiday Inn. Usually a long waiting line.

There is no smoking in Indiana and Florida restaurants and bars. Not sure about other states.

Our Outback wishes they had the business our Texas Roadhouse has. Roadhouse built a new building, doubling the size and there is a waiting line. Outback doesn't have peanuts or rolls like roadhouse. It wouldn't surprise me if our Outback doesn't go out of business.

I think that the guy who wrote the article didn't do his homework.

Fergus Falls MN, population about 14,000, almost 40 restaurants. Fargo ND/Morehead MN area population about 115,000, nearly 160 establishments. Battler Lake Mn, population under 1000, has 8. Just too much competition.

I think too that some, not all, but some of the mom and pop cafés have gone away because mom and pop retired, jr and his sister didn't want to carry on. So mom and pop retired sold the property and it's now something completely different.

(quoted from post at 12:13:14 06/04/17) Yes, but the chains killed the mom and pops, evolution

Kindly stop interjecting common sense and fact into the discussion!

Tried Texas Roadhouse once. Music was deafening, the concept of throwing peanut shells all over the floor was disgusting and the food was mediocre. To each their own I guess.

I tried Texas Roadhouse and it was one of the most noisy and annoying places I ever ate . The staff was running around screaming Happy Birthday all night disturbing the entire restaurant. And the floor was disgusting and needed to be swept.

I would agree Tim, the Road House model seems to be get you sat down, waited on right away, get your drinks and an order and get it out to you quickly. And good to boot. Only issue is that it is so popular the wait time is long. Haven't been to Applebee's lately, last time we were in there it seemed to be a "meet market" for the single crowd and the food was so-so. At 61 yrs. old, not my kind of atmosphere. We usually (usually nothing, every Friday!) go to the local pizza sit down place (Pizza Cottage) for dinner. We've gotten to know almost all the managers and wait staff, watched a lot of them grow up, go to school and get better jobs , get married, have babies, etc. It's a family place and it feels like getting together with family every week. Usually with tip we only spend about $25, total.

Just can't smoke in any public places restaurants, bars, government buildings even banks in Indiana unless you are outside and a certain distance from doors, 8 or 10 ft. Some places are pushing it a little by having outdoor seating for people to smoke, just can't make it a shelter.

I can see Willie smoking in front of the police office.
