Memorial Day, my 2 cents worth

As a member of the American Legion, a non-combat veteran, I placed the flags on the graves our post cares for and participated yesterday as part of the honor guard firing over the graves.
After reading posts about Memorial Day and the meaning, I respect both sides. Please! let us honor those each in our own way and join in remenbering we should be thankful we are free to honor those and are free to our own opinions.
Let us just come together, render our honors and be thankful we are Americans.....

Thanks and I say God Bless ALL Veterans be they dead or alive on this Great American Memorial Day Holiday. As far as I'm concerned ANY DAY AND EVERY DAY is good to honor our Veterans, dead or alive, if killed in action or not, NOT ONLY Veterans day, NOT ONLY Memorial Day. To each their own to honor or remember Veterans dead or alive, regardless when killed, on any day they darn please lol

AMEN I say

In honor of our Veterans of all Wars, and the wars, not declared as such. Just because a soldier does not die from the battle does not make his/her duty any less meaningful. I lost a friend and classmate many years after the Vietnam war to good old agent orange and many are still fighting the after effects of their duties. I am sure that my father died way younger than if he hadn't fought in WW II.
God Bless All

To Ted in NE-OH, there's a book called Blind Man's Bluff about the Cold War submarines that has one section on the Scorpion incident.

You said it John. Thank you and thanks to all who served or are serving this great country.
Richard, Son of a Colonel who served as an Intelligence Officer in WWII and after the war.

Yo Richard, I hope to get to meet you someday on my way North or South. Yep what I said above expresses my true thoughts, but to each their own opinions, live n let live suits me. Son of a WWII Vet who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and although came home, was never the same and became hopelessly ruined.

I just want to bless all that died for our freedom especially for my friend Martin Bennett. There is no greater love than to lay down your life for a friend. I also want to thank all the veterans who served.

I made a pledge to die if need be. but fortunately the occasion never came up for me. I was well compensated for my time and effort.

As the grandson of a WWII veteran who also fought at the Battle of the Bulge I think everyday is a good day to honor our veterans. And Richard says he's coming to Florida next year so we both might get to see him then!

Hope so, I will furnish the adult barley sodas but you have to the ribs HE WOULD DO IT FOR US

I read that. It's a great book!

It also relates how, after the Cold War ended, in a meeting with officials of the now defunct USSR, a U.S. Navy officer acted a bit cocky as if the U.S. had won.

Through an interpreter, a Russian Admiral said, "Tell that young man that when a situation like this ends, you don't ask who won, you ask who survived".

Then, too, it tells of a failed attempt by the U.S. to retrieve a sunken Soviet submarine. Only a part of the sub was retrieved, but that part did contain the remains of six Soviet crewmen. The remains were re-buried at sea with full military honors, with a memorial service in both English and Russian with both national anthems played.

The service was taped, and after the USSR broke up the tape was played for relatives of the Russian crewmen. Some were visibly moved that a country that they had considered arch-enemies for years would treat the Russian dead with the same respect as their own.

Very good book.

The book, "Blind Man's Bluff", also tells of just prior to the Scorpion's final, fateful trip, one crewman walked halfway down the dock and for some unknown reason stopped and refused to go aboard. Premonition?

If Richard shows up next year there is going to be a big get together in the shop and I will definitely cook the ribs. You can provide the refreshments and the tall tales.

I was embarrassed yesterday. I was getting my baler ready for hay so I sent my son in to help the "crew" take down flags at the cemetery Monday evening. Sad to say only one other person showed up to take down 200 small flags and 40 flag poles...... I wish he had called to tell me about he poor turn out I would have come in and helped. As it was my 17 year old and a 70 year Vietnam vet did all the work themselves. He came home at 9:00 I assumed the "crew" talked and had a few beers after finishing up - instead he had actually put in a fair amount of labor.
