706 Diesel New Head and Rings

My neighbor has a 706D (I think early model). It runs very good, has a little blow-by but after getting up to running temp it burns pretty clear. Motor was rebuilt some time ago. He's getting some oil accumulating at the top of the radiator (not much) and has been running it for a few years that way. He's kept clean oil in it and has checked for coolant in the oil but there is not been a trace. He claims the bottom end was checked out and it is solid with no end play and mains look good.

He wants to replace the head gasket and for the trouble also wants to put a new or reconditioned head on it. If the bores look decent and don't show wear beyond the tolerances can he also get away with putting in new rings?

He does not work it hard anymore -- mostly discing, mowing, pushing snow. All of this is his idea. I have no experience with these tractors and I am no engine builder myself.

Oil in radiator, most likely oil cooler and first place to check. You could even unhook cooler if only using it on light work to confirm problem.

Pete23 is correct-oil cooler is most likely suspect.Oil pressure is greater than coolant pressure,so if it fails coolant will remain, but oil will seep into coolant. It accumulates at the top of the radiator because oil floats on water.Mark

The main point -- assuming that it is a leaking head gasket and needs replacing, is it worth doing a new or reconditioned head (and all that is involved) .. and also would it be would worth replacing the rings while the head is off? Just asking the brain trust here ... I have no idea if that is a common practice or is an entirely dumb idea.

If what you are calling oil in the radiator is milky

colored , then it is probably oil . If it is black,

it is most likely soot from a compression leak.

Either head gasket or cracked head . When you remove

the head .if the gasket is good , then have the head

pressure checked.
