Where did this happen?

Was trying to find a news report on the incident. Am totally astounded at how many "dump truck vs. school buss" accidents there have been!! Delaware seems to be a hotspot for such incidents as well, at least in recent years.

We tragically had one of those a couple of years ago. School bus driver pulled out in front of the dump truck. One student killed. How do you miss a huge dump truck?

I dunno, but was horrified at the number of different dump truck/school bus collisions there have been just in the past 3 or 4 years!! This is JUST dump trucks. Nothing concerning trains, semi's, or passenger autos.

You would have to know the area to know how you don't see a dump truck! The intersection is just over a knoll, the bus had to cross the county road and neither was able to see each other till you are right there. I attached a photo to give an idea, intersection just over the knoll then vehicles have to brake hard down hill to avoid an accident. So as long as the dump truck wasn't speeding I can't see any wrong dueing on either side.

Yes, I can see what you mean! Is all flat land here - and I "do" mean flat. Had a trucker deliver out here the other day and I gave him very simple instructions. He called and kept asking if he turns yet....No! Now?.....No! Now?.....No! Seems like every 1/4 mile or so. He finally made it, and I gave him VERY simple instructions to get back to civilization with. ...Never heard whether or not he made it. *lol*

Yes, with roads like that and other such obstructions, not even lowering the speed limit would make much of a difference. Certainly wouldn't eliminate the risk of such accidents. Seems with the availability of solar and LED lighting that it would be possible to make early warning devices for when there is entering traffic. Wouldn't take much at all. Cost? Hmm...what did this one accident cost? Wreckage, hospitalization, lost pay, emergency responders, cleanup, and even the costs of investigation? ...What about the costs to families of the injured?

Brown Swiss, thank you VERY much for the photo!! Sure helps put things into perspective. Might be a very good time to bring up a possible safety suggestion.

After I posted, remembered I never mentioned the point of that story - how flat it is here. Then I figured most folks would easily be able to grasp the meaning. Well, mistake on my part - never assume! So, I mentioned about the trucker as a means of relaying how incredibly boring a drive it can be, and how even when someone knows how far to go if they only watch their odometer, that it is still sometimes very confusing for some.

...Guess it worked in a little better in my head than it did in writing, but simply making a point that no matter where we are, the landscape around us can (and often does!) have a hypnotizing effect on us. We sometimes are busy thinking about life's daily problems and not paying as much attention to our surroundings as we should. In our instance, the ground is flat and straight and you can literally see for miles! And yet, even with the most simple directions of just staying on a road for 20 miles, the guy got confused. I could see how it could be a nightmare scenario in rolling hills country!
