FARMALL SUPER A

Need to get the front tire off of a Super A and replace it. I gave it a good shot of PB Blaster this past Saturday. Probably going back this Friday. The front tires have a total of eight nuts (four pairs). It looks like four actually hold the rim on the hub (the outside four) and four hold the hub onto the tractor (the inside four). I'm thinking, loosen nuts, jack it up, remove rim, bring it home, get it fixed, take it back up, in order to roll the tractor onto the trailer in order to bring it to it's new home.

Does anyone know what size nuts? 7/8? Whatever it is I did not have the right size wrench when I was there Saturday.

ALSO, trying to get it to run. Wires are no good at this point (a lot of insulation is missing). I think I will run negative from battery to ground on tractor, positive from battery to starter, and a wire from positive battery to the positive side of coil, and a wire from negative side of coil to side of distributor. Would this be everyting I need to make a complete circuit in order to get it to run? I will need to clean the points, plugs and connections between distributor and plug wires, plug wires and plugs. Points should be 0.020 or 0.040? I"ve heard both.

Does this sound right? (tractor does have oil and full radiator, I cleaned the gas tank, sediment bowl, and carb last Saturday. It seems to be getting gas)

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks.

Sounds like you have a plan.

I don't know what the lug nut size is. Might be a good time to just buy a cheap set of deep impact sockets, the heavy wall black sockets. You will eventually need them for this project.

What you describe for the wiring will work. Since there is a lot of bad wiring, you may want to disconnect the feed to the existing wiring when you do the temporary hot wire to get it on the trailer. Be extremely careful when cranking it that it is out of gear!

The points set at .020.

If you just need to get it on a trailer another approach that may work is to put the PTO in gear and put a large wrench on the stub shaft and turn it with the tractor in 1st and the clutch blocked to roll it onto the trailer. I loaded a Case VAC with one rear tire that fell into two halves as I was rolling it, but with a 18" crescent wrench on the PTO I could move it fairly easily, and the Super A shouldn't weigh more, I wouldn't think. Then you could get it to wherever it's going and deal with the other issues there.

Well, most factory wiring systems back in the day were 6V positive ground. But any 6 V system works equally well with either + or - ground, it makes no difference. The starter doesn't care one way or the other. As long as you know what the ground is, you can swing either way.
