John Deere Modle 50

80-90 gear oil. Fill it to the "Fill" plug on the side of the case at left rear.

I take it you don't have an Operator's Manual. Good idea to get one as it has lots of photos and data to answer your type of questions asked here.

As [b:654c4848f0]55 50 Ron[/b:654c4848f0] stated below, the operator's manual recommends 80-90 gear oil.

We use 140wt GL-1 in all of our tractors.

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]Rockshaft Assembly[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note the 1 1/4" pipe plug (Key 23) installed on tractors serial number 5000001-5012232, plug (Key 21), and washer (Key 22) installed on tractors serial number 5012233-5033751.

Take a look at the photo below.

Remove the transmission filler plug.

Fill to the bottom of the threads.

You might consider replacing the transmission filler plug just "finger tight".

Makes checking the level much easier before using the tractor.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to the model 50, it is the 2nd best version of the B ever built.
There are dozens of important specs, facts, procedures and how to's that a few sentences on a web site can not do justice to. When the operator's manual or service manual dedicates several pages of text, images and illustrations on that particular topic.
The parts book is free on the JD web site.
The operator's manual and service manuals are reasonably priced at Sharp's for reproductions and from 1-800522-7448 for a real wholesale priced manual.
Shell Rotella T1 straight weight 50 motor oil is heavier than sae 90 gear oil. It is also yellow metal safe and won't destroy the live pro clutch packs if transmission oil seeps past the seal.

James, where you are at with your temp you can get by with that. Up here in the northern part of the country and I am talking about Ohio, not Minnisota that would be like filling things with gun grease. You would not be getting any lubrication at all, that is why they changed the ratings from the 140 on the A & B down to the 80-90 on the later models because if you could get them to move in winter you did not get any lubrication at all.

Our farm is in NE Texas.

Summer temps are well into the 90s and 100s for several months.

The majority of the antique Deere tractors get worked during the Summer months.

None of the antique tractors are used during cold weather.
