Hi. I have a 1967 John Deere 4020 Diesel. I pulled my larger plow, an IH 720 4-18 behind it in the thick clay soils around central indiana last fall. And it was a lot for that tractor. Some of my friends say I should get a 4-16 plow for it. I am looking at these IH plows: 710,720, and a case IH 7500 vari adjust plow. The vari adjust plow can be changed from 14" to 18". Some say that vari plow was about the best I ever made. Besides cost differences. I can't decide which plow to get for the 4020. I know that 4-18 was a heavy load for that 4020. I could only run in 3rd gear with a synchro transmission. I like the vari plow because it looks in the best shape I've seen in a lot of plows I have looked at recently. And it looks beefy and will last beyond my years. I would think the vari plow adjusted to 4-16 would pull the same as the other cause it's biting the same width of path each time. The other 4-16 regular plows I've looked at all look tired and wore out. We dont have a lot of rocks around here so a toggle trip is ok with me to vs spring trip.

I can't speak to the Case vari-width but I have a 4 bottom JD vari-width. Goes from 12 to 24". Set at 16" it will pull much harder then a fixed 16" because at least JD. uses a 20" mold board. So you have much more friction and are lifting the dirt higher. I pulled mine with a 120 hp. fwa. McCormick and could only pull it set at 16". That plow pulls Hard, hard. I now have a 210 hp. Cat trac tractor and set it at 24". Gives that Cat quite a work out. I am not breaking any speed records and you would think that Cat could just play with 4 bottoms. I know you're 4020 would not have a prayer with my JD. 4 bottom. At least not in my S. central Mn. black gumbo soil.

Thank you for the info. The caseIH 7500 plow is basically a little heavier duty IH 735 plow. I think I am leaning towards just getting a fixed 4-16 plow. The guy who has it said his late Brother used it behind a JD 4250 with FWA, well that's another 38 hp more and plus the front axle pulling than what I have.
