It seems that Ken Macfarlane hit on the problem. The 4 wd must have been not totally disconnected. After pulling the wheel and checking stuff visually, I put it in 4wd, ran it a little, then back to 2wd and repeated the process including snapping the 4wd lever firmly and backed up and knock-on-wood it has been quiet .

I don't like the way Chevy's 4wd works. We drive a Chevy most of the time as it handles wonderfully. But when we expect to need 4wd, I take the Dodge! And even then, ONLY the shift-on-the-floor. Can't stand all this push-button electronic mess!
