Older tractors on Craigslist

Been watching Craigs list lately for possible tractor project and maybe I've just lost touch with prices but it sure seems to me like many people on there are asking double or more what a tractor from the 40's and 50's is worth. They are not even listed as restored to try to justify the cost. One example I saw last night was a JDR for $20,000. I've seen Cubs for $4000. Maybe these guys told the spouse the would sell them and know a high enough price won't bring any buyers. HA HA. Are these guys crazy or am I crazy? I did just pay double what a non running Farmall 100 was worth at an auction so maybe its me.

Its not just tractors, I see a lot of items that you could buy a brand new one for what they are listed. Very few bargains on there any more.

Or maybe they don't want to list a reasonable price and have everybody that calls them offer 1/2 or less because they don't want to buy something unless they beat somebody up. BTDT.

Some of it is people who spend way too much on a tractor in the first place and then try to recoup their "investment" later. Others are people who just have an idea of what THEY think it's worth and it sits there. There are still some fair prices in my area.

But if they don't have a reasonable price nobody will call for to try to be gotten down.

I agree. I think a lot of guy decided to get into the hobby when prices peaked along with high grain prices. Now they have a tractor that they just want gone, but are trying to recoup all their money from. I just sold a John Deere B myself and I have been watching prices here and on craigslist. I had to adjust my price accordingly to get it to sell. I have seen A LOT of overpriced tractors on craigslist and on here. I have seen a lot of tractors priced at what they were when the market was hot, but things have been cooling for some time...

The drop dead bargains on CL don't last over 30 minutes, the really good deals might last half a day,the reasonably priced stuff a couple days so if you you don't check it very often all you ever see is the way over priced things.

There is a guy near me that has a Farmall A with a plow, and a couple more implements. They all have been sitting in the trees for close to 10 years now. The tractor has a tree growing in it. He bought the thing 3-4 years before that, then got sick, so it has just sat. He told me he paid $4500 for it, so that's what he needs out of it.....

Several years ago my son and I went to an auction sale and there was a 530 JD that had been completly restored. It sold for 13000.00. On the way home they set in a parking lot looking it over. My son asked if they were having trouble. I told him I did not think so they were just trying to come up with a good story to tell there wife of why they paid that much for an old tractor

This seems to be more true near metro areas asking stupid high prices. Some of them probably honestly don't have an idea but some will post an add for months when they know better thinking some idiot will eventually come along.

Many of the older tractors on CL in our area are estate tractors, kids and grandkids with no clue selling ''antique'' tractors that they think are worth a bundle strictly becasue of age. People I know who sell actual restored or real good using tractors reguarly dont sell on CL, they take them to the right auctions where they will bring the right money.

A lot of people think what they have "in it" has bearing on what its worth. The fact someone bought a tractor for $3000 then spent $4000 on the engine doesn't mean they have a $7000 tractor.

You'll see it with cars and trucks too. I just spent $3000 on the transmission so I need to get that back. No - you are now selling a truck with a working transmission - it might give you a little value but every other truck like it has a working transmission - the fact yours might been abused or neglected so that the transmission needed replaced certainly doesn't add much if any value.

Then you have the people that think because its old it must be an antique and therefor valuable.

Everything said below and then there is the guy who sees a Farmall M at a sale for $1200 and thinks the fella selling it doesn't know what he's got there. So he buys it and puts it on CL for $2400 and gets mad at anyone who tells him what he doesn't want to hear. My favorite response...

"if I can't get that then it will just sit there!"

EXACTLY!

You have to check several times a day and be ready with cash in hand if you want the good deals.

Many of these adds are people fishing for a sucker. Some are people who look at other adds and decide that must be what the junk is selling for. I looked at a 861 Ford the other day that had nothing to offer and the guy kept telling me the transmission was worth $500. I can only say nothing is worth more than what you can actually get out of it and with fewer old guys around who were genuinely interested in these old tractors the bottom is about junk price now.

Agreed. Go to a annual consignment auction and take your time looking. You can get some real deals, and almost never pay much above the highest real value if you don't get carried away. Avoid the buyers premium ones.
