Front axle/fan issue

Hello Everyone,
I have installed a new front axle pin and spacers on my 47' 8N. Well I did a mock-up today with the fan prior to paint and found the fan blades interfere with the front axle by approximately 3/8". The previous owner had no spacers on the front axle which allowed it to shuck for and aft which of course ate up the steering box and so forth which turns into a longer discussion. My question is; did I install the spacers incorrectly? Why would I now have this interference when in its original state there was none? Scratching my head on this one for sure.

Here's what I'm thinking. The 3/4" solid spacer I installed on the forward part of the shaft. I think I need to pull it apart and put the solid spacer to the rear and the shim spacers to the front of the tractor. Yea or nay?

Nah; did my homework and the assembly is correct. I am at a complete loss. This of course is unacceptable. It's making me crazy(ier)!

There is supposed to be NO spacers on that axle. You have them holdind it in the wrong place. Take them out and hook up the radious rods as supposed to be and you will not have it hitting. NO spacers from the factory.

Well isn't that a lick! I was instructed to use the axle spacers on my tractor Leroy but it makes absolute sense that the radius rods would hold it in its correct position. I'll jack her up and remove the spacers. Thanks for the input.

When one wheel is raised and the other lowered it moves a bit from the radius rods cannot change length as would be require if the axle was blocked with spacers so it could not move. The more the axle raises on a side and lowers on the other the farther the axle moves. I have a 41 9N, a 44 2N bought new by Dad in May of 44, had a NAA and a Ferguson TO 30 and all are the same way. You just have to make sure there are no worn parts. The 2N we did have to replace the pivot pin as it was getting worn but that came from when we had a front loader on it and the center section of the axle was bent down. If you tighten it up so it cannot do that moving it is libable to break something else.

Hello again,
I jacked the 47' 8N up today and pulled the shims off the front axle as instructed and pushed it all the way to the rear. Well, I still have interference with the fan blades on the front axle. As I have mentioned before the previous owner was a cobble jockey and after inspection a couple of fan blades have been repaired by brazing. The fan blade diameter is correct; 15.75" but what I'm suspecting is the brazing caused some warpage along with the the front axle pin was so badly worn that it dipped below the fan blade edges. There currently isn't a fan shroud as well which I am going to replace to help the cooling on the tractor. How much clearance is proper from the fan blade to the front edge of the axle? Can I bump the blades forward to create the clearance? I'm getting crazier by the moment!

Hello again,
Well I was sitting in front of the tractor pondering the fan interference issue and it was like the hammer of Thor struck me. The bloody axle was upside down!!! The only reason the original fan didn't have interference was due to the axle pin's excessive wear and the bent blades on the original fan. It's not a wonder I had such a bad time getting the radius rods put back in place. I ripped the old girl apart, reassembled correctly and lo-and-behold I have the proper clearances. I don't know how long it had been operated this way but I do KNOW that it's all proper now. Thanks to all that responded...
