Tractor Buying Advice

Thanks in advance for any and all help,I'm a regular reader but rare poster on this forum. I'm looking for a little guidance with a tractor I'm considering buying. No this is not my first tractor purchase, but I would consider myself at least 1/4 citiot and in need of help. I currently have an IH 674 (diesel) and am thinking very hard about replacing it with a Kubota M4050. The 674 has a couple small issues and I'd like to made sure the Kubota will be a suitable replacement before pulling the trigger. Main uses will be brush hogging (5 footer), grading roads, working up food plots and moving firewood. The real concern is the blade is an 8 foot heavy duty Bush Hog unit. Does anyone have any experience or advice on whether the M4050 will handle it? It has wheel weights on both rear wheels but I'm still on the fence as to whether it's a big enough tractor. Also, does 5K seem about right for the 4050? Good tires, runs great, new clutch, very rusty from sitting outside most if not all of its life. Mid MO if that helps. Thanks for reading.

You Will get Suggestions from a-Z About brands, But I have an 03 Mahindra E-350DI 35 HP... For My Hobby Farm... Garden And Bush hogging etc. about 10Acres And every thing About those tractors is Heavy Duty... Runs a 5ft Bush Hog With ease and 16 Disc Harrow... Larry

what I did for a friend who did not know tractors was go look at the tractor noted model, serial, tire condition, any other things that might be of concern. Called our local Kubota dealer asked if without looking at it and with just my info give a estimate of worth. Was really nice I think to do it because they had sold the tractor, came back with good estimate and friend bought the tractor.

If you look on tractor data.com it should tell you shipping weights of both tractors,be nice if your new unit is atleast or awful close to as heavy as what your already used to.

According to what I'm seeing the Kubota is 15 less HP and 1500-2000 lbs lighter than what I'm used to. Thing is, I know the 674 has been overkill for everything except the blade.

If the Kubota is front wheel assist you are good to go.

If it is 2wheel drive, then I don't know, turns into a guessing game. Traction is an issue with a blade, don't know how the lighter tractor will compare to the heavier one.

the kubota will not handle the eight foot blade with any kind of a load. It would probably be more economical and less maint than the 674. A new back blade would be cheap and it will handle all your other equip.

Tractor questions are like horse questions. If you ask 5 people you will get 6 or 7 answers. If you ask the same 5 people, the same question again tomorrow, you will get 6 totally new and very different answers. It is quite unlikely that any of the people have the same experience with the same tractors. If you can find someone that has actually done it....lucky you.

You can always get a small back blade, they are cheap.

So is the IH to big to fit in places? If so get the Kubota

Is the Kubota 4wd? If so it would be good for your food plots

Other then that's I would keep the IH.

Fixing the little issues with the tractor you have will be less money, and risk. Unless it is just too big for your needs, the IH is going to be satisfactory. Or, buy the other tractor and use it while keeping the IH. If it does what you need sell the IH and polish up the Kubota. Jim

But how do you rate overkill. Too big to store? To clumsy to operate? Too much fuel usage? Land damage?

When fuel prices go up, people panic and trade cars, often spending $5000 to save $500.
I use a big tractor for little jobs sometimes. Overkill yes, but convenience is important too.

No real land damage and not any trouble storing. Running the 5 ft bush hog is the tractors main duty and the 674's footprint is 7 ft wide. Just doesn't leave as clean of a cut and makes it difficult or impossible to get in a few tight spots.

Kubota is 2 wheel drive, a 4 wheel drive is out of the budget. The IH can be a bit big every now and again, but the primary reason for replacement is to find a tractor with as little maintenance as possible. I live an hour and a half from the property and am not near as mechanically inclined as most on here. And with a 2 year old and another one on the way I just don't have as much time out there as I used to. I'd prefer to spend my time cleaning the place up rather than working on the tractor. My hope is that the Kubota would help with that.
