I have briggs lawn mower engine with the auto choke
It starts well when cold
When I shut if off,it will not start hot until I manually close the choke plate
Why ,after warm would I need to do this?
Is there possibly a plugged jet???
Thanks for any info

If it starts cold with the choke "on" its getting more gas. If you have to choke it after running...it still needs more gas. Filter? Jet? I don't think a new carb is too bad money wise. I had one last summer that I had to replace the fuel line from the tank to the carb- I think it was getting soft from age and would collapse when pump was pulling gas thru it. Hope this helps.

If there is an idle mix screw, (probably not) back it out about 1/4 turn.

If no adjustment could be it is getting clogged internally, running too lean. Might try some Seafoam. Or take it apart and scrape out the main jet with a small stiff wire, clean everything with carb spray and compressed air.

Or buy a new carb, Ebay, Jacks, etc.

I wo7ld tell you to go to straight Hi Test gas. Works wonders with my Briggs engines. Last year my Briggs vtech engine was messing around and finally went on ebay and bought a new carb. WOW WOW what a big difference. Starts instantly and runs puuuurfectly! Worth the money.

Get a bottle of[i:c45029719c]'Start Your Engine'[/i:c45029719c]. Kinda spendy, but works great for cleaning the carb. I've had good luck with [i:c45029719c]Seafoam[/i:c45029719c], too. :)

Put a new diaphram between the gas tank and the carb. The little tabs on the diaphram act as one-way check valves to keep gas from going back to the tank while it sits and while it's sucking fuel from the tank. Then pull the shroud off the top of the engine and see if your cooling fins are clogged with grass or mouse nest. Replace the spark plug too.

Some of the newer engines require choking when hot as stated in my owners manual for a new engine I bought. It also states to use hi-test gas.

My last mower required choke hot are cold it did not matter, It was EZ on fuel. My new mower same engine cranks cold/hot no choke  the dealer told me the newer engines were a little ruff on fuel I have not ran it enoufh to say yet...

I've found that the Calf.carb compliant engines want choke and a good amount of throttle to start -hot or cold.

Yes mind wanted full throttle are before you could release the choke it may foul a plug.
