trailert breakaway battery

My battery for my break away safety system is dead. I have 12 volt to a charging unit in the small battery box. I have 12 volt going into this charging unit, but nothing coming out. Shouldn't I have power coming out of the charging unit to keep the battery charged? Thanks stan

Seems like some had a diode in the 12v charging line.

It is there to keep the trailer battery from discharging if the tow vehicle were left connected and it's battery discharged.

I haven't seen one with a charger in the box. The battery just wires to the 12v line from the tow vehicle to keep it charged.

If yours has the diode, it should allow power to flow to the trailer battery, and not back out. You could eliminate it.

On some units if the battery is totally dead they won't work. Try charging the battery some to make sure it has some voltage then q
