Decal removal

I want to remove the side decals on my Farmall H without distroying the paint. The 2150 red paint is good but the
decal white part has washed off. The company replaced the decals but I can,t get the old ones off. I tryed a heatgun

without success. today. I imagine Lacquer thinner would remove the decal but also the paint , Any ideas

Thanks , Robert in Md.

On our racer we used oven cleaner to remove the decals.

Might I suggest you contact a local body shop or automotive
paint supply for more advice.
Good Luck, J

there is a rubber wheel made for removing decals and pin strips it need to turn slower than a grinder on what ever you use to power it and will not harm the paint. I have one and have used a few times with good luck.

I got one at the local auto parts store. I chuck it in an old 3/8" drill. Works great. I call it a "rotary eraser". It reminds me of the old pencil erasers.

There is a huge difference between vinyl "graphics" and real decals which are colored paint over a clear substrate on glossy surfaced paper, which is transferred by soaking in water. Vinyl has pretty much replaced real decals. But there are still a lot of decals out there from older restorations. I doubt that the rubber wheel will work on real decals.

Try an electric heat gun. That is what the car dealer's use to remove other dealer's stickers. joe

I always used a heat gun. Also use wd-40 and a straight razor blade. The wd makes it so the adhesive doesn't gum up and very carefully slide the razor between the paint and decal.

There is a lot of good advice but may I throw in some advice. I would take it to a body shop who will stand behind their work. 5hey screw up you get a repaint. Couldn't cost that much to have a PRO do it. Your decals could be partialy bonded to the paint and will not come off easily. Please consider.

Carquest sells them if you have one nearby. They do work excellent. Pricy. I think 3M make these. I tried all of the other suggestions on here and these rubber wheels hands down work the best. I got a pickup from a contractor with decals all over it and the only thing noticeable is where I started out with a blade and heat gun.

(quoted from post at 13:54:34 04/26/17) Goo Gone or Goof-off and a pliable plastic scraper, like your driver's license or credit card.

Mike

That will work for vinyl graphics but not decals.

If there is adhesive they are not decals but are vinyl graphics. The OP could very likely have real decals on his old Farmall.

That is stickers. The OP is asking about decals.

Go to your nearest auto parts store and buy a 3M wheel designed for that very purpose. Put it in a battery powered drill and removing decals is quick and easy. I have used this several times to remove decals off of big trucks. After the removal, just use a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol and you will have a perfect surface again.

Your big trucks do not have decals they have vinyl graphics.
