Freeze Plug Removal

I need to remove a 2-inch diameter freeze plug in the side of an engine block in order to install a block heater. Access to the plug is somewhat limited but not too bad. What methods do you prefer to get the plugs out? Thanks for suggestions.

I generally like to knock them all the way in then turn them sideways and grab the edge with some "water pump" pliers to pull it out.

Suffolk1.......I usually hammer a large screwdriver and lever it out. Yer replacing it ennyhow with yer block heater. CAUTION: not all block heaters fit engine blocks 'cuz there ain't room inside the block fer the coils. There are "head-bolt" style that you kenn install. Better'n nuttin' I'd guess but recommend real heaters installed in the LOWER radiator hoze. Other than using 50/50 anti-freeze, I'd shine a heatlamp on the carbie fer about 1-hr before wanting to start the tractor. I'd wear INSULATED COVERALS and cap. In Boy Scouts, we teach'em iff'n yer feet are cold, putta cap on. 'cuz most of yer heat loss is thru the head. (except when you peeeeee, dang willie disapears from cold fingers) Ittza end of April, and yer worrying about starting yer tractor now? ........the amazed Dell
